Bottle Holding and Sippy Cups

Honestly without this board I would be searching the internet with no direction!
I have 10.5 mnth ( 8.5 corrected) girls. They are terrible feeders to begin wtih , however our dr wanted us to start introducing sippy cups, but they can't even hold their traditional bottles. We got a variety of sippy cups but they got so much air that they become so gassy. Am I trying to rush this or is there any special trick !!!??? Thanks

Re: Bottle Holding and Sippy Cups

  • My singleton didn't switch from bottle to sippy until after his first birthday and we was full term. The twins I will introduce it when they seem ready. You can always offer it but personally I wouldn't rush it. Every parent does it differently so just go with what you feel is best and go off their cues. I don't understand why doctors try to speed threw the milestones especially with preemies.

  • Never been a sippy cup fan, but it sounds like they need more practice is all. Take it slow and keep letting them try. There us a wide variety of cups out there, try a different kind, they may do better with the gas issue.
  • The norm is to start offering it Spanish with the goal of being switched over at about a year. It can cause a lot of dental issues if kids stay on the bottle for too long. Not sure if that should be adjusted age or not. If they can't hold a regular bottle yet, i right tend toward making the bottle holding my first goal. It may sound ridiculous, but our toddler held her tiny little 2 ounce cups fiest, and then the 4 ounce. We refilled them to make sure she was well-fed. We use the Nuby sippy cups with our singleton. Very very similar to a bottle but just enough away. That being said, we're having a difficult time getting her to give them up. Good luck!

DS & DD learned to use Avent sippy cups at around 8 months. It took probably about 2 weeks of offering the cup with water in it at meal times. Eventually they figured it out and once they got it, they were holding the cups themselves within about a month. That was way before they figured out how to hold their own bottles- DS didn't do that until 12 months and at 13 months now, DD still can't do it.

It takes a lot of patience to transition to a sippy cup. Don't stress if they can't hold it on their own yet. We held the cups for the kids while they figured out how to drink. That way they were only dealing with one new skill at a time.

    Good luck!

  • My 16 mo old DD still uses her bottle.  Does water from a sippy or a glass with a straw if you hold it.  Won't do milk from sippy. Wanted to try to switch before triplets come (will likely even be home 6 wks from now), but don't think it's going to happen.  Oh, well, they'll do it when they're ready

No periods due to 17 years of ballet and distance running after college.  Zero response to 2 months of Clomid, little response to Letrozole.  IUI left with 9 cysts = too many viable eggs due to age.  On to IVF.  Low dose of all meds still produced 37 mature eggs 12.6.11.  Froze due to overstimulation.

  • thank you all so much! We tried a little today with water in a sippy and it wasn't a complete fail! I just need to relax!!!
  • We're going thru the same thing over here--it totally stressed me out trying to introduce sippies at meal times, so I'd just put an inch or two of water in the cups and leave them laying around my girls' toys during play time. They always found them & could explore on their own, no pressure, no hunger pangs, etc. once they got it down, we moved them to meals. We're still not using them 100% of the time, but we're getting there...I hope...
