Using a "big boy" cup

I am at a loss on how to get my 18mo DS to use a regular cup. Every time I give him a cup he does 1 of 2 things. He either picks it up and shakes it up and down as hard as he can, or he actually tries to drink but tips the cup completely upright. Neither of these really work for successful drinking. If I try to help show him how to hold the cup right, he either gets mad and yells at me for not letting him do it, or he just lets go and makes me completely take over. I don't know what else to do. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

Re: Using a "big boy" cup

  • We practiced in the bath tub. He's almost 2 and still can't really handle more than a few sips worth in a cup but he can handle small amounts relatively well.

  • We practice in the bath a lot too.  We just got the avent natural drinking cup and she's doing a good job with that.  They tip it up and then have to push the lid down a bit with their lips for liquid to come out.  She never used a sippy cup so she's learning the whole "tip up" thing.
  • I'm going to start pushing the open cup when it's warmer and we're outside.  That way DS can spill it everywhere and he will just dry off in the sun.

Is it worth getting one of the training cups where you can adjust how much liquid comes out?
  • Look up the "wow cup". It's a no spill & you have to suck the edge to get water out
  • Thanks everyone for your help. I tried to give him a cup in the tub a couple of days ago but he ended up filling the cup too far and then dumping all the water on his face and scared himself so I think I'll just wait until the weather is nicer and we can go outside like smileybabyboy said and give him a cup then. That way I don't have to worry about the mess and I'll have better control of the amount of liquid in the cup. Thanks again!

  • Mine is only one but I am thinking about keeping him in a straw cup(which he is in now and loves) until he is about 3 or 4 that way are place to eat he can still drink out of a cup and not make a mess and at 3 and 4 they know better. BUT this is just me

  • I agree-Get the Wow Cup
  • My 14 month old tries to drink out of a cup but she spills 99% of it.  It's still okay--we just give water in her high chair and then she gets to change her clothes.  DH laughs, which is probably not helpful, since she loves to do things to make him laugh.
