Transitioning to WCM - how long did it take you?

DS just had his one-year checkup on Thursday and we're now going to transition him from formula to WCM.  I've decided to use the "slowly start replacing an ounce of formula at a time with WCM" method.  I'm just wondering how long to do each stage.  As in, 1 oz. milk to 3 oz formula to start, but for how long?  My mom said to do it really slowly, like one week per ounce.  Is that too slowly, or just right?  How long did you take?  TIA!

It took us about 3 weeks. We did 1/4 WCM/ 3/4 BM the first week, half and half the second, 3/4 WCM/1/4 BM the third, and then 100% WCM. We didn't have any problems. ETA: lurking from January. :)

  • 3 weeks.  We started before he was 1.  A week of 25% WCM, 75% BM; then 50% WCM, 50% BM; then 75% WCM, 25% BM.

  • It took longer than it would've had to because I had formula to use up. I was doing 1 oz of formula to 3 or 4 oz of WCM for probably at least 2 weeks just because I wasn't going to throw it away. Up until that point, I think we increased the ratio pretty slowly. A week per oz sounds about right. She didn't have any problems with the transition, so I just added more WCM when I felt like it.

  • Long time lurker here. Even though DS is in soy milk due to allergies, we went cold turkey. He didn't seem to care thankfully. We still use toddler formula for when we go out for extended periods, but he definitely prefers the milk.

  • Oh the first day or two may be rough but these little ones are resilient. Don't give up though!

Samesies. Started replacing one bottle a day with WCM instead of BM and I'm pretty sure he didn't notice a difference. Then went to straight up WCM all the time.

Me too, but I was KU, and went from enough milk to ebf to barely enough milk to do one feeding in about 7 days.

  • We started introducing it at meal times at around 11 months. When i cut out a nursing session I tried to replace with a cup of milk, but that was a fail so we've stuck to meal times. I just realized the other week that she finally stopped letting the milk just fall out of her mouth! Her milk intake has finally started increasing and we are down to 1 nursing. Its been a long road for us but we are finally there (I think). GL!

How did you know your LO had a milk allergy? I'm trying to determine if my 12 mo old has a lactose allergy of some sort. Any advice is much appreciated.
