Standard u/s at 24w to check cervical length?

I was informed at my appointment last week that my OB's office now does a standard u/s at 24w to check for cervical length to possibly assess the likelihood of preterm labor. This is a definite change from my last pregnancy. Anyone else's doctor do this? Regardless, I'm excited to see baby again. I thought the anatomy scan was going to be the only u/s!

Re: Standard u/s at 24w to check cervical length?

  • My office doesnt. The Dr did look herself to make sure my cervix was high and closed at my appt after I complained about the pressure.

  • My MFM does although there doesn't seem to be a reason other than having twins. I am getting it checked at every appointment since 16w.
  • I won't have any more ultrasounds unless I start measuring too far ahead/behind.

  • I will be having another full anatomy scan and cervical length as we'll because I am considered high risk. I also still have cervical length checks every 2 weeks plus progesterone shots although everything still looks normal.
  • Nothing for 24 weeks. My OB said he would do another u/s at 28-30 weeks. Didn't tell me why though, now that I think about it.

  • Mine doesn't do this. I just had the anatomy scan and I'm not sure when they do another ultrasound (if they do). With DS I had growth ultrasounds every month, so I don't know what's standard.

  • When I go in to my perinatal it's they check cervical length every time, but they don't use a vag cam for it, just the normal, so I'm sure there is a margin of error they account for. They don't have specific ultrasounds planned to check the length, but it's just standard for them to do while they're checking on the other stuff. Since I have more ultrasounds planned than a normal pregnancy, I guess I just get lucky to get checked more often.

  • Mine does but it's because I'm high risk after 10 years of cervical cancer stuff.
  • Right now, my MFM office has me coming in every 2 weeks for a cervix check or growth scan. It's a little annoying from a time perspective but it's great to have peace of mind that everything is going ok.

  • I had it done at 21 weeks, but they also had me sign a consent form to do it. So I did have the option to opt out, if I had wanted to.

  • My office doesn't do it, but I can see it would be nice for just that added piece of mind. It does seem pretty close to the A/S, however. I had my cervix measured at my A/S.

  • They checked mine during the a/s, but have not mentioned a second check further along. They did however have me schedule a follow up a/s which is this Wednesday, I didn't think to ask what for just said ok.

  • A new study was released that indicated a correlation with early cervical measurements and a likelihood of preterm labor. More offices are beginning to do this quick check although it's not everywhere yet. The perinatalogist knew I have a background in biology and teach it, and mentioned it to me. It's likely going to become more and more common, especially for first time moms and for those with previous losses.

  • I hope not. Every ultrasound costs me 250 out of pocket... not covered expense under my insurance. Awesome.
  • I don't even think my insurance would cover that ultrasound as just a routine check.  Tricare only covers "Medically necessary ultrasound" and it's not medically necessary to check that on every patient with out any prior history of problems or risk.

Yes, my doctor mentioned some new study, too. Must be the same one!
  • Not here...neither for this oregnancy (appt last Friday) or my previous one. I have no history that would suggest it either though.

  • Mine wanted to do it at the 20 week A/S but I opted not to but I believe it is pretty common for them to do.

  • Mine measured short at my A/S and I'm supposed to get another ultrasound at 28-29 weeks.

Being that I'm on bedrest now due to a short cervix I recommend anyone with the option to get it checked does it. I asked them to check mine at every ultrasound bc I feared this would happen, otherwise they wouldn't have and nobody would know.
