Seeing white "sparks"?

Today I was in my laundry room folding laundry and was actually having a good day compared to most. Out of nowhere I started seeing little white sparks(for lack of a better word) in my peripheral vision moving forward. I blinked a few times and they kept on coming. It was like a firecracker was blowing up behind me and the sparks were flying forward. I'm not sure how else to explain it. It kind of put me in a daze for a few seconds. Throughout my pregnancy I have suffered from intense migraines and morning sickness the entire time, but today I felt fine when this happened. I read online it could be a sign of pre-eclampsia but I took my blood pressure right after it happened and it was normal. Has anyone else experienced this??? Geez pregnancy is so weird!

Re: Seeing white "sparks"?

  • This exact same thing happened to me in the shower! I was so confused because I'd blink to try to make it stop & it wouldn't. So weird!

  • My mom mentioned ocular migraines as well. I'm going to have to research them. It's so crazy I have never had a problem with migraines before pregnancy. They have made me absolutely miserable and now apparently I'm seeing things. I'm so ready for this part to be over and get my little girl here! I know it will be so worth it! Thanks for the info.
  • I got this yesterday for the first time. I was throwing up and all of a sudden was seeing this in my eyes. It went away pretty fast as well. Haven't had it again since.

  • I get this a lot, too. Plus floaters, squiggles etc. I have low BP, so I'm not sure what mine are from but I've had them since well before I was pregnant.

I would call my doctor just to be safe. Sparks/spots/floaters can be an early warning sign of pre-e.

This. Please call your doctor immediately.

  • Call your doctor. It could be harmless, but vision changes are a warning sign for pre-eclampsia, and that's not anything to mess around with. I hope it's nothing, but you need to be very careful!

  • I was also going to suggest ocular migraines. DH had this the other night. Lasted 20 min or so. He took a nap and felt much better. But it's always better to be safe than sorry!
  • I have this happen from time to time even when not pregnant - but I'd call your OB.  Like others mentioned, vision changes/seeing things could be signs of something else.

  • That definitely sounds like an ocular migraine. I've had them. Call your doctor because while it could be nothing it could also be a sign something else is going on.
  • Eh, I attribute it to dehydration or the blood rushing to my head if I move too quickly. It happens to me sometimes, but I have 2x a week appointments, so I would think they'd catch it if it was something else.

  • I'd definitely check with the doctor also. It's not like it happened while you were throwing up and could assume it was from straining. Since you've never had them before I would definitely want to tell the dr. Better safe than sorry!
  • I used to get them towards the end of
My pregnancy with DS and BP was fine at the moment but continued to creep up.

And mine were black dots, I called them bugs...I thought I was seeing black bugs moving around on the wall beside me. I've had them once this pregnancy but not again.

  • Yup, that happened to me about 2 weeks ago while I was teaching. I thought I was going to pass out in front of the kids, thankfully, that didn't happen. My school nurse checked my bp and it was fine. I still have no reason why. Good luck!

  • I had this happen about a month back. I sat down and waited to pass out but nothing of the sort happened. It could be many things but like PP said, call just to be sure. My doc said if it kept happening she'd refer me to a neurologist. It has only happened the once...
  • After standing for awhile your blood pressure can lower suddenly, causing the visual manifestations. Hooray joys of pregnancy.
  • It could be 3 things as mentioned above. Pre-e, ocular migraines (I get these), or very rare but serious a detached retina but there would be vision loss with that.

  • I get these now and I did pre pregnancy too... Almost always when I bend over to get something or quick motions like that... I also get the ocular migraines but these are usually completely different. If this is the first time you've ever experienced it I would call your doctor since it can be a sign of pre e. I don't tend to worry though since it's not a new thing for me and my bp has been low/normal the entire time.
  • I get the exact same thing.  It happened a ton this weekend while I was cleaning.  It seems that any type of bending over makes it worse.

  • It could be nothing, but call your doctor at this point you don't want to risk it being a sign if something else. It never hurts you to call!

I get this too, it's different than when I get up too fast. It's almost like white sparkly streamers. I had some other symptoms like nausea, and feeling like I was going to pass out and throw up at the same time. Went to my OB, blood pressure was great and no protein in my urine. She said it was most likely an ocular migraine. She gave me some pain meds and anti nausea meds and told me to take it easy. I hardly ever get migraines when I'm not pregnant, and I've never had one like this. So, call your doc just to be on the safe side!
