I've also eaten lunch meat quite a bit through this entire pregnancy (I usually microwave, but not always), but no bagged salads. I buy heads of lettuce, which I hope are safer.
I'm glad I lurk over here so I could see this. Damnit. We usually get Dole too, but not the Italian kind. I hope the other varieties are ok. I used their spinach to make dinner last night.
Edited: I just saw the other link on the page, duh. Sorry, no caffeine. It looks like it was just a few limited varieties of their Italian blends after all.
Nice. Don't think I've bought Dole in a long time. It seems to be a lot of stuff you wouldn't think about that gets this contamination! I was doing some research about sushi the other day (because I effing want sushi) and one of the articles I read said you're actually more likely to get a contaminated hamburger than sushi. Not that a hamburger is prime food for prenatal nutrition, but still!
Jimmy John's (cold!) was one of the few foods that sounded good to me in my second month of pregnancy. I've also done sushi - what do you think pregnant women in Japan eat? And no I did not only get sushi that did not contain raw food. I could never recommend what risks other women should be comfortable with, but for me I was perfectly comfortable with those risks.
I seriously side eye the listeria related food recommendations for pregnant women. If they honestly wanted to prevent listeria, they should include salads, fresh fruit etc. Instead they just isolate a handful of items and tell you to avoid them.
I am obviously more careful with food while I am pregnant but I am not against the occasional medium rare steak or raw sushi - everything in moderation and of course make sure it's from a reputable restaurant.
Any raw fruit or vegetable could contain listeria or ecoli or salmonella or giardia. Any commercially prepared food could have ecoli or hepatatis or norovirus. Just because it is possible doesn't mean it is likely!
Scary. I guess that's why you're supposed to wash your salad before you eat it (which I admit I never do). I think you just need to make your own rules about food when it comes to your pregnancy. I've been eating medium-rare steak, salami, beef jerky and had a piece of vegetarian sushi at a Japanese restaurant the other night. I'm not going to freak out over foods which have never given me trouble in the past.
