Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Please suggest your sippy!

Hi ladies. My daughter is 10.5 months and won't take a bottle or sippy cup with breast milk. I have exclusively breastfed her from the start. For a while I gave her a bottle with no problem. We went a long period where I never had to give her one (I am a sahm) and now she refuses. Big mistake on my part. I decided to forget the bottle and try a sippy cup. She uses a Zoli one with water with meals. No problems. When I give her breastmilk she won't take it. I have tried to give her milk at night instead of nursing and I have had my husband try too. She just screams. Any suggestions on getting her to take a cup of milk? We have some weekends coming up where I will have to leave her. Please help :(

The only one my son will drink out of is the Nuby with soft spout... Also when your husband gives her the sippy with milk at night, leave the room. If she thinks your boob isn't an option she might take it!

  • I bought a nuby yesterday with a straw. I tried it first and it was really hard to get the water out. You almost have to bite down a bit. I had my husband try last night and I went downstairs. She fell asleep after a few minutes of crying.

  • We have some nuby ones that are hard...they are meant for older kids.  I use the Nuby, Flip and Sip touch valve straw cups. They are very easy to use.  My daughter figured it out around 7/8months.  They are harder to find in stores but are totally worth the extra effort to find.

I agree with the others, be far away when your husband tries to feed her.  Make sure she isn't full but isn't starving (she will likely meltdown and refuse). It will take some time for her to accept just stay calm and roll with it.

  • I'm having the same issue. My dr suggested a teaspoon of sugar dissolved in warm water and pout it in last... I think the sweetness is meant to make it more enticing. I've had no luck but you might f
  • oops! You might find it helps. Good luck. I gave up and will start to try again soon... Made the same mistake of only ever breast feeding and no bottle..... Next time I'll be doing it differently lol!!

Honestly, I don't think when you introduce it really matters that much. It just depends on the baby. We introduced bottles around 2weekd I think, and he took them fine. Then he started refusing right before I went back to work.
  • Thanks ladies! She actually took a little more of it last night. She has been using a Zoli straw cup for water so I just used that and she drank like an ounce and a half. Not much but big progress! My husband just put her to bed while I stayed downstairs. Hopefully we're moving in the right direction :)
