How often do you suction?

LO is more congested than usual, but is still able to eat and sleep without making a scene.

Me and DH are in two different camps- he thinks minimal suctioning/bulb aspirator usage is best, letting LO's body figure out what's going on, not irritating his nose lining, etc.

The stuffiness makes me nervous and I want to saline and suction.

I did last night, but am nervous to keep doing it, for fear it will do more irritation and harm than good.

I want to get a Nose Frida, too, but it's 3am Friday night, ha.

How often do you suction?

Re: How often do you suction?

  • Definitely get a nose frida, makes suctioning much easier. DD gets this look of confusion when I use it as opposed to outright screaming with a bulb syringe. I think suction as often as you think necessary since babies bodies don't really figure out what to do with mucous. It just sits there and they don't know how to blow it out.

  • Thank you! Yeah after I typed that I realized, I think DH is looking at mucous almost like breast milk supply- if you suction if out, the body will think it needs more.... Yeah. I will get a NF today!
  • I suction as often as LO needs it to breathe unimpeded. When he had a head cold, it was multiple times a day, right now, none. I definitely recommend the nose Frieda! It was so much easier to use, and got more of the mucous out.

  • When conjested, I suck it out. Tell dh, it would be like an adult blowing their nose, except the baby can't blow, instead you suction! :).
  • We were suctioning ozzy quite frequently (like every couple hours) because the poor guy was so congested all the time. The nose frida will be your best friend. I found it doesn't irritate his nose nearly as much as the bulb plus gets more out. Now that we've been on soy formula, I haven't suctioned him at all!

    Hope the congestion passes!

  • I was the exact same as you. I have be suctioning lot ever since LO was born. Several times a day and during each feed at night as he is the worst when he lays down. We are also on our 3rd bottle of saline drops and JRs only 2 months old. (I did spill have of one during one night)I finally just got a nose Frida 2 days ago when I went into the city. It's amazing!!
  • Oh my gosh that all seems so much! Is it because you guys have winter babies that have colds?
I have never suctioned Indie. She has had a couple of mild colds, slight dry snot on the edges of her nose, but she breathes fine, so I just leave her... That's ok right haha! We are coming in to autumn now, so I will have to invest in this nose thingy you speak of.

My pedi told me some babies are just mucousy babies, but my LO was also born on one of our coldest days of the year and we had a lot of -40 days following our return home. The winter air is super dry, I also have a humififier in LO's room as well as a Scentsy warmer with a Vicks/water mixture on. Things seem to be getting better, I hate when LO I struggling to breathe out of his nose & some of the booger I was pulling out of his nose were so huge my jaw would drop at times. So hoping LO doesn't develop his daddy's allergies or we are in for a long haul into the spring/summer too!
  • Only when he chokes on his formula or has a booger that's bothering him.

I think this is baby specific more than it's caused by weather (that or we've just been really lucky!) because my kid doesn't have a snot issue at all.  Sometimes I suction if I see a booger in there but it's never seemed to bother his breathing.

  • DS2 has silent reflux and it seems to give him congestion issues. I typically have to use saline and suction at night the most. Some times he needs it at every night feed, so every 2 hours or less. It may be my imagination but I think it has improved slightly since I cut out dairy a few weeks ago. Then again it has warmed up a bit in that time too so the air in our house is less dry.

  • I hardly ever suction now. We bought a cool must humidifier and run it 24/7 though so this may or may not help? He was really mucousy after we brought him home (he was delivered via csection so I guess that had something to do with it) but it has since improved. He has his occasional night where it seems hard for him to breathe but other than that we leave his nose alone.

  • I suction whenever she seems stuffed up or I can see boogers in her nose. The bulb takes several suctions to get things out though, so I need to check out this nosefrida. Plus, LO looks at me like I'm assaulting her when I have to suction one nostril more than a couple times in a row.

OP, I would not worry about over-suctioning. The PP's analogy about adults blowing their noses is on point.
