Moms with Tummy Sleepers

So LO randomly decided that she wanted to sleep on her tummy for two of her naps today. She has never slept on her tummy before even though she's been able to roll back to belly for about 6 weeks (tummy to back since early December). She doesn't have anything in the crib with her, but it's still making me a little nervous, especially if she does it tonight since I will also be sleeping rather than obsessively staring at the monitor. If you LO is a tummy sleeper, do you do anything special?

Re: Moms with Tummy Sleepers

  • Nothing special here. We don't even have a monitor in their room. I can hear them from our room just fine.

Once they can get on their belly, they're fine to sleep there. My boys can roll really well and one of them learned how to sit from laying on his belly today (yay!). I'm way past the point of worrying about belly sleeping.

They are also not my first kids.

  • Nothing special. We don't have the monitor on at night since we can hear her from our room. She has been able to turn her head since she was very very little, and has always slept on her tummy.
I am sure your LO will be ok!

  • DD recently started it too. But I take Comfort knowing she can roll, she has space to roll, and she can turn her head.

  • LO always sleeps on his tummy for naps. I put him that way because he usually sleeps longer. There is a lovey and blanket in his crib. We have a monitor, but I don't worry too much. He can roll, army crawl and pull things off his face. Also not my first.

@carrotcake06‌ Yay for belly to sitting! LO is so close to doing it too... He just doesn't have much interest in sitting still- he's always on the move!
  • My LO sleeps on her belly...but I also have a Angelcare Motion Monitor, so I have that peace of mind but I always still wake a lot to check her

They are old enough to sleep on their tummy's now. My lo has slept on hers for months. It's fine.

  • F/U question on this topic....once lo is rolling, if they always roll to their belly to sleep do you just start putting them down on the belly or should they still be put down on their backs?
  • @LokiLahve I still put LO down on her back, and she generally will roll to her side/belly.  She stays on her back for a little bit, and then she moves.

He gets up on his hands and knees and "revs" - like rocking back and forth. He just figured out that if he rocks back hard enough, he'll land on his bum. And then he can right himself into a sitting position.

He's thisclose to crawling, but can't get the coordination down. He ends up scooting backward on his tummy.

  • We do the same as everyone else. LO rolls to her belly while she's sleeping and we don't do anything special. She's been a little roly poly for a few months now.

  • Ds wont sleep unless on his tummy. I dont do anything special for him. I just let him do his thing

  • Nothing special here either. LO has slept on her belly since before 2 months old, she just never slept soundly on her back and always preferred her tummy. She has a stuffed animal toy at one end of the crib and she sleeps with a blanket covering her lower half. We put her right on her belly to sleep. We do have an angelcare monitor and video monitor so I have peace of mind at night. At this age they're past the stage where SIDS is most prevalent so I don't worry about that like I did when she was younger.

  • Nothing special here. Jr is almost 7 months old at this point and moves around pretty well.

  • PPs have pretty much answered the question. DD has been sleeping on her tummy since week 1 or two and has had good head control since early on. I wouldn't worry too much mama, try to rest easy know your LO is comfy and dreaming.
  • LO sleeps on his tummy with his bum up in the air. Doesn't look comfy, but only way he sleeps. He's slept like that for well over a month, closer to 2 months.
My dr said that once they start going onto their stomachs to sleep let them be and don't bother rolling him back to his back.
  • Thanks everyone! I figured I shouldn't worry since LO can roll both ways and has good head control, but it was so out of character for her! Her first two teeth are just popping through, so I wonder if that's at all related. She slept on her back last night, so I'm interested to see what she does for her naps today (if anything since we'll have a St. Patty's parade passing 1 block from our house for several hours).

  • DS has been on his belly for a while, he moves when he needs to. No worries.

  • If they can roll, my feeling is that they are fine on their belly.
