Pregnant after 35

NT Scan (ultrascreen) appt related question

Hi Ladies!
I haven't posted on here in a while, life has been so busy so here's my short little (re) intro:  35, pregnant with #2 after 3 losses in the past 18 months. Have a DD (whom we had no problem conceiving) who will be 4 shortly.  I am now 13w along, which feels great to have made it this far.  We were on our way to IVF when miraculously (I say that because my OB told me I wasn't going to O the month we conceived) this little bean came along.

I just had my NT Scan yesterday and all my measurements looks great, all within normal range. We are now waiting on blood work results.  When I met with my OB, he said everything looked great but said "as you know, I can't say for sure that all is great until we get the blood test results back. Everything looks normal but we need to see those numbers before we can say we're out of the woods."  Now mind you, we have no history of chromosomal disorders in our family, or Down's. I don't remember worrying about that with my DD, I feel like I had the scan and we were sent on our merry way and told all was good, which was then confirmed once the result got back... I guess I'm just worried and been holding my breath with this one due to past history. We have yet to make the big announcement (family and close friends know) because we want to make sure all is well with our LO, but man, I feel like my students are starting to eye my mid section and wonder... ;0)
If you've had the NT Scan, what has your experience been? If all looked well on the ultrasound, were your blood test results good too? Or not? Just trying to feel it out. Now we've got to wait at least another week for the results. Sigh

Re: NT Scan (ultrascreen) appt related question

  • We did the NT scan and blood work all on the same day. Our NT scan was great and so were our blood tests. The blood tests are more accurate than the NT scan which is likely why your doc is waiting on them to give you the all clear. Best wishes for good results!

  • I had my blood drawn about a week before the scan so they could give me the combined results at the scan. We knew the scan went fine and then they added in the blood test results to give a final result (the blood tests only helped our odds of everything being fine). I'm sure if your scan did not show anything alarming that your blood tests will come back fine, too. Try not to worry and hoping you hear the final, good results soon!

  • Similar to PP's here - I had my final blood test done a few days before the Anatomy Scan. As it was two weeks before I was due to see the OB again (which was today) we called and found out that the scan showed no problems at all. We therefore assumed the bloods were ok in that respect, and they were. Pretty sure they would have called had there been any issues with the blood or the scan but I couldn't wait so I called them.

  • I had my NT scan and blood work done the same day. I didn't feel relieved until we got the blood work back since it's more accurate.

  • I have had four NT scans and three related bloodworks.  We didn't have the first trimester blood taken with this current pregnancy since I am 36 and had Verifi done instead.
All four of my NT scans showed normal and non concerning measurements. 2 out of the 3 bloods came back with non concerning results.  DD1's blood results were not reassuring and coupled with her awesome measurements made her chance of having Down's Syndrome 1/98.  We met with a genetic counselor who told us that she still had an excellent chance of being born without Down's and that with our genetic history, she would be completely comfortable with us not having an amnio performed.  We did have a level two ultrasound which showed no soft markers.  DD was born without Down's Syndrome.  I later read that issues with the placenta can skew the blood results.  DD1 had a low lying placenta with a SH.  It moved the night of my NT scan causing a large red bleed.
In my experience I think you can start to breathe a sigh of relief as the measurements look good.  Also, if the blood comes back concerning, try not to freak out too much.  A lot of people have had concerning results which have turned into perfectly healthy and chromosomal normal children.

  • I had NT scan and Materni21 blood work same day.

I am 40. 39 at time of NT. hubby has a nephew with Downs who is in his late 20s.
Our NT scan that day was fine. Dr said blood results would be in a week to ten days later. I actually was not too worries since they said the scan was good. Blood results are better but I still was not too worries.

I had a Mmc at 11 1/2 weeks last Feb. we did chromosome testing as well and all was normal.

We waited to tell family until 2 nd trimester. I was to paranoid to durning 1 st tri.

  • I had scan a few weeks ago. First try baby was moving way too much to get measurement so we had to go back two days later to try again. Baby still wouldn't cooperate. I've got an acrobat on my hands. Lol. So we just ended up doing blood work. Had my second blood draw yesterday and should know in a week the results. However tbe perinatal doctor that saw my first ultrasound said he didnt see anything that concerned him even without the measurement. So we just wait for blood results but feel good about it. Good luck.
  • Thanks ladies!
This is all so new to me since we never had to worry with DD#1 because I was younger and had never shown signs of abnormalities before but since I've had 3 losses and I've crossed over that 35 line, they are keeping a closer eye on me.
I just can't wait to (hopefully) finally breathe easier and start enjoying this pregnancy and tell the whole world!  Just a few more days! Fingers crossed.
