Bottle fed our first baby!

Found out yesterday one of our cows had her first calf. Unfortunately, she (momma cow) is having complications from the birth and cannot stand right now. This is the first time in the last eight years of having cows that this has happened. The vet came over today to assess mom and baby and decided that we needed to bottle feed baby ASAP or baby would die. So this is a picture of baby getting her first meal of powdered colostrum from my father in law. I got to feed her first and then handed over the bottle so I could snap some photos. I think my motherly instinct kicked in because it was absolutely magical when the babe finally figured out how to use the bottle and we were able to get some food in her belly. Isn't she a cutie pie? Had to share with you ladies! Sorry it's sideways!

  • So cute! I'm a sucker for baby animals!
  • Apparently, cows have nerves that run along the inside of their pelvis. If the have a large calf, long labor, or a small birth canal, sometimes these nerves can get damaged. When that happens, it can paralyze the cow. We have had many calves born on our farm over the last few years and this the the first time that this has happened. Hopefully momma will get up soon and can possibly start nursing her calf. Until then we get to bottle feed! It seems they are both doing well right now though. So my fingers are crossed for momma to get up tomorrow.
  • That sounds scary, but I'm used to horses. If they are down for too long, their circulation slows, and serious damage can happen. Hope momma is feeling better tomorrow.

So awesome! We lived by a dairy when I was little and they let me bottle feed their calves sometimes. So much fun! Hope momma feels better soon.

So cute! I grew up on a dairy farm and my favorite thing was getting to feed the babies their bottles. Was usually pretty messy!

  • I love feeding bottle babies! My inlaws have a farm and buy calves (FIL refuses to calve their own but MIL is working in him) so we end up feeding quite a bit when we go over to visit.

  • So, how long does he bottle feed them for?
  • Careful when you're feeding her that she doesn't buck the bottle into  your tummy! Have had this happen (when not pregnant) and it is not pleasant. Would hate for the little calf to take a jab at your little one.

I'm wanting to say 2-3 months. Not very long. Once they start eating hay they work on weaning the bottle. They are constantly getting new ones in so I lose track! Lol. And as PP said, watch that they don't buck ya. It's instinct for them to pull then buck when they are nursing the mom so they naturally do it with the bottle too. That's the other thing, I haven't fed for a couple of years between being pregnant and then having to watch DS while we visit and back to being pregnant again.
