Yay!!! I'm dying to start the prepping, but I need somewhere to put them when they are done!
Me too but I couldn't help myself!! I'm waiting on my dresser so I packed them back in the box they came in. I figure I will wash one more time before she comes home.

Right now they are all in bags, once I get the organizer cart thing put together - after we move our room, they can get put away.
woohoo!! that's a beautiful looking stack of poop catchers
make sure you do the water drop test... if a single drop absorbs immediately into the dry fiber, they are fully prepped. if not, wash wash wash again until it does!
@hlm184, you can boil 3-4 at a time in a big pot of water - 15 minutes should do the trick as long as you're stirring them often enough, but you NEED to use fresh water with each new batch of diapers. you'll see the prefolds will stain the water a yellowish color by the end of your boiling process - these oils are what prevent the cotton from absorbing, hence the need for fresh water each time you boil a new batch. the boiling process basically speeds up the work that's done by exposing the diapers to load after load of hot washing machine water. it took me all afternoon long to boil my 24 prefolds, but at least it didn't take me 7-9 loads in the washing machine!!
you can prep any organic cotton this way, but boiling only is advised for 100% cotton stuff like prefolds or inserts/doublers... anything with a PUL layer or snaps or velcro (or other synthetic or natural fibers) will melt or deform in the boiling water.

Awesome! I bet that feels so great to have them ready. I'm glad you posted this too, because I have half a stash right now and really need to get my butt in gear so that I can diaper our babe for at least a whole day...eek! Good for you!
How many nb prefolds did you order !? I am doing a mix of both prefolds with covers and fitteds and a few aio ! With aio and fitted I have 12 ! And was planning on ordering 12 nb prefolds. How many do you have in your nb stash all together ?
@Vjlewis07, I hope you don't mind me chiming in, but I wanted to share this link with you: http://jilliansdrawers.com/newtocloth. This is the resource I used when building our stash (which I totally completed after reading this post, thanks, @heidiman!) Jillian's Drawers recommends 18-24 diapers and 6-8 covers for the first 5 months.
This might be a stupid question, but do you need to prep all new cotton diapers this way? I just bought some new BumGenius Elementals and I'm not sure what to do....I guess I naively thought I just throw them in the washer & line dry?

your elementals will need to be washed and dried about 7-9 times before they are fully prepped. you can't boil elementals because of the PUL and snaps. to cut down on time, i did a was-wash-dry sequence, so i'd only dry every other wash cycle. you can use detergent, but only a little, and you don't need to put the detergent in every time... maybe just once or a few times of all of those wash cycles.
@vjlewis07 @mamafantastic recommended 24 NB and small each. I've got 24 of each. I'm planning on sticking with prefolds and covers but I got a couple AIOs to try and some were free through Kelly's closet. I have like 5 NB covers and I keep buying thirsties size 1and 2 because I want all the colors!!! I know I've over done it on covers but oh well. I can match her outfits or something :-)
Yay! I prepped my prefolds and after about 3 washes/drying, I tried the "test" that mama fantastic told me and they seemed to absorb quickly so I'm hoping I prepped them enough. Guess I will find out in a few weeks!
This coming back up makes me want to start on those flat ones. I can't believe its been that long! @rockstarlaw Good luck prepping! Its surprisingly satisfying :-)
I have a bunch of prepped smalls, but I haven't even ordered my nb ones yet! Have been dithering about how many prefolds I should get, 'cause I want to get some workhorses too. Decisions, decisions...
I wasn't a big fan of the workhorses... I thought they were very bulky. I gave all mine away. I'd def order those orange edge prefolds ASAP, though!
that's awesome!! i hope they work out well for you! everybody's diapering experience is different (partly because of lifestyle, and partly because of different-shaped baby bodies).
