Re: when i first wake up...

  • I have that, too. I have to be careful how I stretch or I'll get a vicious cramp!

  • Just be glad it's not a daily occurrence when you're not pregnant... I'm stiff whether I'm prego or not :(

  • I had this too until I started eating at least one banana every day.  I'm starting to hate bananas, but at least my legs don't cramp up.
  • Make sure you're well hydrated and are getting enough electrolytes. If you're eating a normal balanced diet you should be fine, but you can try eating more bananas if you want (they are good for potassium), but if you don't like bananas you can try drinking Gatorade.  I would cut it 50/50 with water though, because it has a lot of sugar in it :-)

  • I just told my midwife about my horrible leg cramps at night/in the morning. She also suggested I take a calcium/magnesium supplement. Although where I work we do recommend a good intake of potassium and drink lots of water to stay hydrated.

  • I have to second the Gatorade suggestion! I know it is empty calories but it has helped so much! I buy the mix at the grocery store so that I can make it with extra water. I am still very stiff in the mornings but I think that is just to be expected at 39 weeks, but I rarely get the terrible leg cramps and my legs do feel better in the AM.
  • I get them in my thighs and hips. I found that sleeping with a pillow between my legs helps.

  • I get them pretty frequently....partially because i have a border collie who sneaks up on the bed in the middle of the night :)

I asked my doc & agree with PP, potassium, lots of water & stretching before bed.
