Selecting a new peditrician

When do you do this? Does the new peditirican visit the baby for a checkup while still in the hospital? If not, when would the first appointment be?

Re: Selecting a new peditrician

  • I think the hospital thing depends. We didn't make our first appt until after the baby was born and the ode saw her for the first time at 2 months.

The pediatrician I chose will come to the hospital either the day or the day after my son is born. When I preregistered at the hospital they asked if I had someone selected yet. The hospital will call the doctor once I give birth.

  • I'm trying to pick a pediatrician now since I'm a FTM and don't have one already. I think it depends on where you deliver. If your Ped has privileges at that hospital then they might be able to do the first visit there. I will be delivering farther away and so I will have an on-site pediatrician do the check before we leave hospital and then the first well-baby visit will be with whatever one I choose for long-term. I will try to do phone calls to the nurses to narrow down good candidates and then try to interview my final choices if I have time before i pop.

We selected our pediatrician in January. We started with a list of 4 trusted referrals. We called their offices, made appointments, and went in and met/interviewed them all. They were all equally qualified. We ultimately selected the pediatrician we felt matched our parenting style and philosophy best.

Our pediatrician does not come to the hospital after birth. She wants the baby to come to her office on day 2 (after hospital release) for a long appointment (she said the first appointment typically takes two hours!).
  • My OB and hospital required me to pick one before 32w. At my hospital the hospital pediatrician can release the baby if yours isn't available.

  • Our baby will be seen by the pedi's in the hospital while there. After discharge we will see our pedi in 1-3 days depending on how baby is doing. Just call the office you're interested in and ask how they do it. Most hospitals have some sort of pedi coverage in case your pedi doesn't have priviledges.

This. Our pedi doesn't have privileges at our hospital. Baby will be seen by the hospital ones and then we will see ours 1-3 days after leaving the hospital.
