What does your LO like to sleep in ?

Last night was out first night home . She didn't sleep as well as she did in the hospital . She didn't even fall asleep until after her 2 a.m feeding ( is this normal ? ). We started her out in the bassinet she didn't like that at all !!!! DH got up and put the rock n play together , that seemed to help a lot ! She's not a fan of swaddling bc she likes to have her hands and fingers free so I can't use that . I guess I'm just wondering is this not falling asleep until 2 normal ? And do most babies not like bassinets ? I know I will eventually get a feel for what she liked it was just overwhelming our first night and as a mother I couldn't get her to go to sleep :(

Re: What does your LO like to sleep in ?

  • Levi hates his bassinet at night. He much prefers his rock and play but he's in it almost all day so we don't wanna put him in it at night too. I think bc it keeps him in a firmer hold, and in the bassinet he's free to squirm . There are many nights we won't fall asleep until around 2, or sometimes at all. We're working on techniques to help him differentiate between night and day, hopefully he'll get it soon. Good luck! Everything sounds normal to me, but I have no clue what I'm doing half the time.

We have the halo sleep sack and she can keep her arms out because she also does not like them restricted. That is all she can get out though and then we have her in the pack n play, we just remove the napper and changing table each night before bed and I think my husband said it's called the bassinet part. It just doesn't like a conventional bassinet to me, idk haha

Is the sleep sack kind of tight around the legs / bottom ? She doesn't mind being swaddled as long as her hands are free .

  • Emma does not like her arms restrained so she wears a long sleeve shirt and pants at night. Then we swaddle her from her chest down so her feet stay warm (she kicks her socks off). She is starting to sleep better in her bassinet. The first few nights at home she would only sleep when held. Just keep laying her down in her bassinet and when she cries pick her up. We talked to our pediatrician about this and she said it takes time for some newborns to adjust to sleeping in a bassinet or crib.
  • I'm a first time mom without my outside baby yet but I did read The Happiest Baby on the Block which recommends a swing for sleeping for the first 3 months, along with swaddling and a sound machine.
  • Ha. We did the EXACT same thing- tried to put LO in the bassinet, but he was having none of that, so DH put together the rock n play in the middle of the night! He sleeps in that, but also likes a fleece halo swaddle sack. I do a combination of the options bc he likes to suck on his hands- I put his arms through the arm holes, but then wrap the swaddle around them while they're bent up.

  • It depends on her mood. Last night she slept in crib all night ( of course woke for feeds) but if she's having a rough time she sleeps in her swing.

We switch on and off from swaddling hands in or leaving them out. She tolerates both. So if she's having a rough time I swaddle arms in and bam she's asleep ( usually) but she does enjoy having her arms out and likes to suck her fingers so during the day at least in leave them out.
  • We swaddle our little guy only at night and leave his arms and hands out so he can suck on his hands.
  • Ours wants nothing to do with her pack n play bassinet area. I have been sleeping with her on me. She does fine in her swing during the day though so I think we are going to move it into the bedroom and then try the pack n play more during the day to see if we can get her comfortable in it.
  • Yep totally normal, unfortunately! We are doing bassinet for naps so he gets used to it and the swing for bedtime. He also doesnt like his arms restrained so we do the swaddle sack with arms out and a sleeper with the built in hand mitts so he doesn't scratch himself up. Do whatever you need to do in order to get sleep, no matter where it means you put the baby down.
  • Yes, it is overwhelming! I'd say at this point, anything is normal. A newborns sleeping habits are just all over the place. There's no real pattern or consistency. My advice is to just guess and check. Keep trying different things until you find something that works. It's rough but after a few weeks you'll have developed a bit more of routine.

  • A few things:

Yes, it's absolutely normal for babies' days and nights to be flipped for a while. (When I was pg with DS1, a friend warned me that he'd be born with jet lag lol.) If you're lucky, it'll just be a few days; if your baby is like my DS1, it could be 6 weeks. You can help them figure it out by making sure there's light, noise and stimulation during the daytime.

Also, there is at least one night within the first few days that LO starts freaking out because she's realized that she's out of the womb. She won't let you put her down to sleep and act like she's hungry all night. If you're BFing, what this does for you is stimulate your milk production. You may have experienced that last night.

Third - this may sound totally duh, but I've found it much easier to swaddle when LO is already asleep. DS1 hated swaddling but I think that was partly because I didn't know what I was doing. I would try to swaddle while he was awake and of course he'd fight it. Now, I've been nursing DS2 to sleep, then swaddling him so that he's nice and comfy, and putting him down. (Mind you, DS2 is generally easier and sleepier than DS1 ever was, so I can't take full credit for any tricks I've discovered.) I swaddle him with his arms bent so that his hands are by his face.

Finally, to answer your actual question... DS1 hated the PNP bassinet for the first few weeks but DS2 is happy sleeping almost anywhere. He's in the PNP at night and RNP or being worn during the day.

  • DD gets a onesie with a sleep sack or sleep bag. We then wrap a blanket around her from about the waist down. She wants her arms free, but is always cold so she needs the blanket.

Though she's has bad congestion the last few days and can't seem to sleep in the bassinet part of the pack n play. I think it's due to the lack of incline. I think we're going to try using her swing tonight (mom and dad need some sleep tonight!)

  • The first night home I attempted Cam in his bassinet in our bedroom. It was so big and he was so small...and he screamed.
We had received the snuggapuppy rock and play and decided to try that...Cam loves it!! It's slightly inclined and conforms to him when he's in it. It's ah-mazing! Plus, it can vibrate and it's on curved legs and you can rock it.
    I love it :)
  • Thanks ladies ! I just sent DH to target for a swaddler she likes being swaddled as long as her hands are free ! I'll try that tonight . Maybe I'm a paranoid FTM and I was constantly up checking on her !
