sad news-loss mentioned

It seems I've lost another pregnancy, I miscarried last night :-(
This month is extra sad because if I didn't lose my last pregnancy I would have been delivering this month. Has anyone else experienced multiple loss and gone on to have a successful pregnancy? With the one I could explain it to just the odds, but this second loss has me scared we won't be able to have another. My cnm said if you have 3 you get sent to a re, but with 2 they just have you come in earlier to take a look to make sure all is well. I know tonight I'll be hugging lo extra close!

  • Thanks, we didn't tell anyone in real life so its a relief to not have to untell but its nice to have someone to talk to
  • I'm sorry.  Not sure if this helps or not, but I do have a friend who had multiple losses after her first. Her second child just turned one.  Sending you lots of hugs.

Thanks, that does help! I feel like the innocence I had with my first is lost, he was so easy, hopefully I just got a bad hand twice.

  • I have had multiple losses and one really spry little lady :), I'm so sorry for your loss and I know how it feels to worry it's not going to happen after subsequent losses (I still wonder that sometimes), but just take a breath and keep going. *hugs*

Thanks, that helps a lot to know it's not uncommon. Dh was very concerned that we have only a 1 in 3 success rate, but I mentioned since one in 10 pregnancies end in loss, I still think 2 is within the average, it just started to nah at me though.

  • I'm really sorry for your loss. Have they ever checked your progesterone levels in the beginning of pregnancy? Or did you chart when you were ttc and know if you have a short luteal phase? That could be a possible explanation. You're right, though, they don't typically test for multiple losses before a third m/c. My SIL had two losses before going on to have two successful pregnancies. It could just be bad luck, but it doesn't make it any easier to deal with. ((Hugs))

I wasn't formally charting but did do opks a few months and found that on those months I had a short lp. I took b6 the month we conceived just in case but ok not sure if that changed anything. I guess the next pregnancy I will ask for progesterone, the cnm I saw mentioned I could come in early and they could do that for me next time, I'm kicking myself for not going in early this time but I was afraid if I didn't see something, it would stress me out, because I have a 37 day cycle and they schedule appointments based on 28. However in the spirit if everything happens for a reason I'd rather my body know and handle chromosomal defects this way than keep them going until I get really attached and find out something qwerty 14 or 20 weeks. This is much easier to deal with emotionally in my opinion.

Does short lp mean low progesterone?
  • Yes, an LP of 10 Days or less is usually a sign of low progesterone. Talk to your cnm about checking your level at 7 days past ovulation once your cycles are back after the m/c. If it's less than 10 at 7dpo, you should be using progesterone supplements, ideally every cycle starting at ovulation. Though most cnms probably won't give it to you until a bfp.

  • I'm sorry for your loss, and sending hugs

We had a mops meeting discussing loss last year and out of a room of about 50 women about 5 had multiple losses and then had a healthy baby. So it's far more common than I ever knew

Thanks, I should send an email.  My original CNM is very matter of fact, the person I saw yesterday was saying how I should email them and come in early next time so I could always ask her about progesterone, as I have the feeling my original cnm would be very by the book and wait until you have a 3rd mc etc.  I appreciate the advice!
  • First I am sorry for your loss.  I had one before DD and one last April at 10wks.  We figured out after my first I wasn't ovulating correctly and went on clomid and that gave us DD.  I got a bfp when we started trying again and didn't call, which I kicked myself for afterwards b/c they had mentioned my progesterone levels a year before with DD but I figured I got pregnant on my own I was good.  After that loss they said to call the AM I get a bfp.  I charted and got a bfp and had a 25 day cycle and called and at first they didn't believe me b/c I was 3 wks preg according to their calculations.  I had a blood test done that day and they called that day and confirmed it was positive and started me on progesterone suppositories 2 times per day for 12 wks.  I went back for the return blood test 2 days later and the numbers doubled and they had me come back a week later and they were good again.  I went in at 7 wks for an u/s and saw the heartbeat.  So they monitored me much more closely this time, but it was reassuring.  I am due in 4 wks so I have come full circle from the pain of last year.  I wish success for you too.  Next time you get a bfp call ASAP and demand a blood test to check your progesterone levels.

Thanks, I think I'm going to ask about progesterone now just so it's something on the table versus trying to get them to agree when I get a bfp next, their appointment system does not let me call the department directly, although I can send them a message online that they read daily.

    Thank you!

  • That is a good plan.  I hope they agree to monitor your levels and that you get your bfp soon.
