Breast pump through insurance?

Is it too early to contact my insurance about getting a breast pump? I don't why but I want it already! My husband and I have been working on the nursery and don't really have the money to buy a lot so getting something paid for by insurance is like getting to buy a new toy but for free!

Re: Breast pump through insurance?

  • Many require you to wait until your baby is born. Call your insurance company.

  • United healthcare allows you to get it 30 days before your due date
  • Thanks so much I have Aetna so I will give them a call!
  • Call your company. It varies by insurance. Mine pays for a medela double electric but only with a script and after the baby's born.

  • Anyone know what you can get through Kaiser?

  • If you have a scheduled c/s early united health care will allow you to get it 30 days before that rather than your actual due date :)
  • I have Kaiser too, anyone know what they offer??
  • Keystone has no specific waiting period regarding the time until the birth.  You need a script, and they'll give you a list of providers.  There are 4 pump options, or you can use the cost towards an upgrade for the Medela PISA.  Alternatively, they also offer a $50 rebate if you buy it retail at a store.  Call now and get the information, it's better to know what hoops you have to jump through.  Just be prepared for a hellishly long wait- with the healthcare reforms, the hold times are astronomical.  I spent upwards of 15 hours on the phone with my insurance last month and it's asinine.

I received mine yesterday! They usually want to wait until closer to the due date, but when I let the company know that I was switching insurance (I'm going on my husband's), they sent it out before the switch. I'm a bit relieved to know it's taken care of :)

  • I called a couple of weeks ago and I am going to wait until I'm closer.  She just said it goes towards my deductible, and it depends on if the "store" submits their paperwork first or if the hospital does (for my birth).  Whatever.  I don't need more stuff here right now anyway, so I will wait until she's here most likely!

  • I have Aetna, which covers a double electric pump at 100%.  I chose YummyMummy as a vendor and ordered the Medela PIT(only has a bag big enough to carry the electric pump, no accessories).  My order is pending and email states I will recieve it 5-7 days after confirmation through insurance etc.  Also if they're busy it will go by your due date in which you'll receive no later than 30 days prior.
  • I ordered through yummy mummy too!

  • Mine is 1005 covered, with no co-pay.  I have to order it from their supply company andh ave to wait until after the birth to order, BUT the supply company delivers it right to your house the day or next day you order it.  I don't want to use my pump until I'm closer to going back to work, so I don't mind not having it til after baby is here.
  • Agh, I wish I knew this info when DS was born!!! That could have been $200ish spent elsewhere!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this is a fairly recent change and wasn't available when your (or my) son was born.

Correct! I know it was not an option when my 3.5 year old was born.

  • Yes correct it only became an option because of the affordable care act so I think this is the first year it's really in effect maybe last year too.
  • I am 24w and already got mine (100% covered) through Blue Cross Blue Shield.

I got the Medela and it is already at our house.

I have Aetna as well and am going through YummyMummys.  The Medela PISA is the same exact one as in stores, it just comes with less accessories.

  • My Coworker is about 15 weeks ahead of me.  We have United Healthcare and she received her's last week. She said it was extremely easy.
  • I also have Aetna, have you checked out sunmed they have a new medela pump called the advanced personal pump that they said is the exact same as the pump in style only the accessories are different because it was created specifically for this new insurance covered stuff and it's 100% covered or for less than $100 you can upgrade to the pump in style that's sold in stores with all the accessories!
  • Are there specific questions you asked when you (general you) called the insurance company? I feel like I wasn't clear enough when I called mine because I was basically told that I could purchase whatever I wanted then I would need to file a claim but I may not be reimbursed the full amount because it totally depends on the pump. I feel like I need to write down specific questions so I don't get flustered & then call them back.

My insurance company (Aetna) had no answers. They gave me the phone numbers of the DME companies to order from and told me to ask them any questions about specifics. All my insurance company said is "100% covered if you order through our vendors (DME), or 60% covered if you order out of network"

All other specifics had to be asked of the DME, the insurance rep knew nothing.

  • I have UHC and am working with Aeroflow Healthcare.  www.breastpumps.aeroflowinc.com. They carry Ameda, Hygeia, Medela and Tomy.  I am still not sure which pump I am going to settle on but it's nice to have options.  Aeroflow also have upgrade options available where you can pay extra and get the tote, backpack or even the Medela Freestyle.
