Reflux

Hey,
Our little one had a little bit of reflux while in the hospital but it seemed to be taken care of by holding him upright for 15-20 minutes after eating. He occasionally would have a little spit up but not much.  However since weve been home it seems to have gotten worse.  He seems uncomfortable after feedings and doesn't want to be laid  down on his back. He has been spiting up much more oftern. have been feeding him, holding him upright then placing him in his swing.  I was just wondering if anyone has any advice or found a way to help their LO.  Someone mentioned using Colic Calm, anyone have experience using this?

Thanks

My DS1 had bad reflux and we ended up having him sleep in a rock n play to help at night. I also talked to the dr and got him a prescription for Zantac. That helped a lot. By the time he was 6mo he had outgrown it and didn't need the Zantac or the incline when sleeping anymore.

  • DD has reflux. talk to your pedi about it but mine said the swing makes their reflux worse since their stomachs are crunched. we did move our swing (we have the snug-a-bunny) so it's not laying down but in the incline position but she said to try and use the RnP instead. Zantac is our next step. when your LO spits up, is he crying or does he seem calm? if he's calm, the spit up isn't caused by reflux.

  • We are on reflux baby #2. It really doesn't kick in until about two to three weeks after baby is born. I was unable to breast feed our first, and she was constipated which made the reflux worse. We did meds (Prilosec I think) for a bit which helped, and used formula with the proteins broken down (called Nutramigen in Canada). We eventually moved to formula with rice thickener in it and we started rice cereal at four months. Once DD started solids things got a lot better.

With number two (DS) we are just getting into Nutramigen and I'll be asking for meds next week. I still pump and get about 6 oz of breast milk which I give him at night because it seems to digest better and he seems to get to sleep sooner.

We try to hold LO upright for as long as possible after feedings and this helps. It's also helps to let go of any need for routine if you can - I find I can't always predict when the bad reflux episodes will happen, so if I avoid getting hung up on routine like we did with DD, I stress less.

Good luck! I would suggest a check in for reflux moms but there are too many check-ins. Hopefully something works for you to make it livable. Having survived it once, the only thing keeping me sane this time is that I know it eventually ends.
  • My pedi recommended mylanta. I also think it's very imp that they get a couple burps before being put down. If it's reflux you will almost always get wet burps but sometimes that helps get it out of the way and settle things in the tummy. I give my LO mylanta 20-30 mins before his last feed for the day. It helps a ton!

I've been researching colic calm and though it's sworn by tons of people (including my pharmacist) it contains charcoal in it's inactive ingredients and I am a little sckeptical on that. I read a study that charcoal can affect healthy intestine development in children in the long run. Now I don't know how much if it is true and if the study was validated but honestly, as long as it's not overdone, if colic calm works then I think it's fine. My pedi is not a fan of these colic relief gripe water stuff but instead suggested 1 oz camomile tea ( over 24 hours) which is a main ingredient in many colic relief stuff anyways if at all baby seems to have colicky symptoms.
  • DD has been on reflux meds now for about a week and a half. They seem to be helping thankfully. She was screaming in pain after she'd eat and then projectile vomiting constantly. The spitting up doesn't stop, which we were warned about by the doctor, but the pain seems to be almost gone.

Talk to your pedi about it. Your LO might require meds to help control it or you might have a baby that will create a lot more laundry.
