Taboo topic- toddler pillows

I have been looking to see if I can find DS a flat small pillow for his crib. Not sure where to find one, but I know he is ready given how he tries to use his blanket or stuffy as a pillow each night. Anyone know here I can find one?

Re: Taboo topic- toddler pillows

  • I've always just used an older pillow from our house that's already mashed down for the baby. DD2 keeps hogging my pillow when I pull her into bed with me. Half of the time I end up sleeping without a pillow and just letting her have mine. I think she would love having one in her crib and am considering trying it this weekend.

  • E has a (not so cheep) pillow from Walmart that I bought but didn't like. He's been using it for about 3 months. It's a side sleeper pillow and is pretty firm, if that helps. :)

  • We use a cheap Target pillow for DS1, which is pretty flat

  • We just used an old pillow that was already flat. But if you don't have one, I would just get a cheap on. Like pp said. They smash down rather quickly.

We bought this foam toddler pillow after DS and DD started using their crib blankets as a pillow: https://www.amazon.com/Clevamama-ClevaFoam-Toddler-Pillow-Cream/dp/B008Y2DG8O/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1394849270&sr=8-2&keywords=clevamama+baby+pillow

DS took to it quickly at around 10 months old and sleeps on it pretty routinely. It's thin but comfy and supportive. DS loves it. DD didn't like having it in the crib (I think she thought it was in the way because she didn't understand that she could sleep on top of it!), so we took it out of the crib and will try again at some point in the future with her. It made me nervous at first to give the kids a pillow but now I don't think twice about it.

So at what age did you start using pillows, for the STM. Yes, I KNOW AAP says 2 years, but I think we know how I feel about blindly and strictly following guidelines...
With dd, we did when she moved to a toddler bed at 18 months.  DS isn't ready.  He wiggles all over the place still. Although, he does like mine when he gets in my bed.    And while dd has a pillow, she rarely uses it.
  • It's been different for every kid. DS1 had one in his crib at 15 monthsish. DS2 didn't get one until he moved to a big boy bed - closer to age 2. DD1 transfered to a toddler bed early - probably 16 months - and got a pillow then. DD2 has been using my pillow nightly for months when she moves to bed with me. She's my first baby that sleeps on my head in bed with me and thus just got used to using a pillow. She will sleep without one in her crib, but if she's in my bed, she wants to be on the pillow. I have a feeling she would sleep better if I put a pillow in her crib, but we'll see...

  • DS is still a big wiggler, and we sleep on a foam mattress, so I don't see him needing a pillow anytime soon. He's also a tummy sleeper, and that doesn't seem terrible conducive to adding a pillow under his head.

  • I started E with a pillow when he was like 10 or 11 months old (can't remember) because he was sick. I hadn't planned on leaving it in when he got better, but he decided sleeping with one was the only way he would sleep. Okey dokey then.

DD didn't start using a pillow until she was like 3 or something. It was a whole ago so I don't really remember. I just remember putting her to bed one night and she had snatched one of my pillows. When I asked her why, she said she wanted to be like me. :). It never helped her sleep any better.... But whatever.

  • Thank you for all the advice. DH and I took an "adults only" trip into the States for the weekend and the mall ended up having a store called My Pillow. So we bought him a "first pillow" there. It was probably a stupid purchase given the price, but at least it's a good size for him to tackle. He has it in his crib now so we will see if he actually uses it. It may still be too fluffy yet.
