I apologize in advance for the block of text. There are spaces when I type it, but my iPad evidently hates them! I'll start off by saying that I didn't have a birth plan, I didn't necessarily want any meds during birth, but I'm a FTM, and had no idea what this pain was like and wanted to see how it went. I also didn't want to be induced and I REALLY didn't want pitocin. Last Thursday I had my 39 wk appt and a growth scan. They were estimating her weight at 8lb 6oz, but they had told me previously when I asked about having to be induced at week 39 due to GD (after reading it here), I was frequently told "they weren't sure that was a problem for me" or "we at least want to get you to your due date" (3/11). When the Dr came in she promptly told me that they wanted to induce me and that was what was best so the baby didn't get any larger. Queue immediate crying and extreme fear in me. They were going to induce me the next day (Friday 3/7). MH Went outside to make arrangements for being out of work beginning the next day, and I went and suffered through my last endocrinology appt, trying my hardest not to cry.
We arrived at the birth center the next morning (one week ago today) at 10:30AM. The OB came in and checked me and I was at 2cm. They decided they wanted to use cytotec, at noon my induction began with the cytotec under my tongue which began 6 hrs of me being strapped to monitors and unable to sleep or anything. By 6PM they checked me and I was only at 3, so they gave me another cytotec, this time directly on my cervix. They also gave me morphine to sleep (since I am THE lightest sleeper in the world, MH snores, and there was no way I could sleep with those monitors strapped to me all night either.) By morning I don't really think I had progressed any further (there are a lot of holes in my story since I was foggy all weekend), so they broke my water, I started contracting a couple hours later, I spent some time in the tub and then got some Nubain, to again, hopefully try to get some sleep. No such luck. I almost slept, but unfortunately the contractions were keeping me awake and I began feeling like they could cause me to pass out or puke. I don't do well with that type of pain. So I decided to call the nurse in and ask about the epidural. They checked and I was at 5cm. This was at about 30 hrs since I took the first cytotec.
I received it shortly after and shortly after that I did end up puking, but only that one time. Shortly after that, the pain was completely gone. They started pitocin. Eventually they checked me again and I was ready to go! However the Dr. said we could wait even longer for her to descend further into my pelvis if I wanted and that way I wouldn't have to push as long. I was all about this "pushing for less time" thing so I tried, once again to get some sleep. Let's just say sleep really didn't want to be friends with me during labor. Around midnight I could feel that she was definitely lower and kinda like I had to poop. So I called the nurse back in and around 12:10 I started pushing. The standard "I push while 2 people hold my legs and I have to sit-up and also hold the back side of my thighs while pushing" thing wasn't really working for me. So I asked if there was any way we could attempt to have gravity work in my favor. They brought out this bar (that I had heard about in Birthing class) that attached over the bed, wrapped a sheet around it that I then held onto while pulling myself up to push. (2 ppl still holding my legs) this worked wonders for me and after about 2 hrs of pushing the Dr. threatened episiotomy and I was NOT having it, so I got her out with the next push.
Aubrey Jean was born at 1:57 AM 3/9/14, 3 minutes before daylight savings time change! She is more than perfect in every way! Evidently I am very good at giving birth since all I've heard is how great I look and that people can't believe how much I was up and walking around so shortly after giving birth.
The moral of the story, I think, is: get the epidural! I watched countless documentaries and wanted to try med free birth, but when it came down to it, I just don't see what it accomplishes. Don't get me wrong, all the power to you ladies who are champion birth givers and can handle that, I just don't see the point of being in all that pain, plus I was beyond exhausted as this was a close to 40 hr. Process that I had had virtually no sleep throughout. I needed it to relax and get this done. (not to mention the lady next door to me SCREAMING BLOODY MURDER about how much pain she was in and to "get her out of me" I looked at the nurse and she immediately said "she doesn't have the epidural") Case and point. In the end I ended up having cytotec, penicillin, morphine, nubain, epidural, and pitocin. And it was sooo worth all of it!

Re: Aubrey Jean's birth story!
Epidurals aren't for everyone, though. I hated mine for the short time the test dose was working and was so much happier when they turned it off (it was a precaution because of the twins).
