Re: S/O the Epidural- Did you get one?

  • There wasn't time for anything and ended up getting a spinal/gas before emergency c section. I begged for the epidural (or to just be clubbed over the head) does that count?

I had three epidurals and none of them worked. I can't have a spinal block, so Staidol was my friend.

ETA: Sunny side up baby here too

  • I did not have one with my first. I did have one with my second.

With A I held out a long time but decided to get one. I had to be induced for medical reasons. My body and baby were not ready for labour and in case it turned to c-section I wanted to have it ready. I did not want to be put under.

Next time I will be med-free unless circumstances call for something else. Epidurals can be amazing for those who want them.
  • I also had a sunny side up baby and the epidural pretty much wore off so it was kind of pointless lol.

  • I got it, but I didn't like. The dr gave me such a high dosage that I could not feel a single thing from the waist down. My husband was lifting my leg into the air, and for all I felt, it could have been someone else's leg. Also, I got that horrible tingly feeling you get when your foot falls asleep, all over my body. I couldn't do anything to relieve the tingling, and that was excruciating.

When it came time to push, I was so numb that I couldn't feel if I was pushing or not. Because of that, thy had to turn off my epidural. After it wore off, I felt EVERYTHING.

I'm not sure if I'll get one if I have another LO. I guess I'll see how I feel when that time comes.

  • I got one. It only worked on one side so they rolled me onto my side, which helped. The epidural was great when it came to my contractions but wore off when it was time to push. My baby was also sunny side up. I didn't realize that the epidural was affected by that.

  • I hated my epi this time around. I felt so overdosed. I couldn't move my legs at all as in I couldn't even lift them an inch off the bed. And I had crazy annoying constant tingling. I asked them to turn it down but they wouldn't.

  • I got one and I am on the fence about the next time. I couldn't feel anything and I think it made labor harder. But who knows.

  • I went into my induction saying starting med free. After about 5hrs on pitocin I got nubaine. After another 3 i adked for the epi. It only worked on one side but it was enough to take the egde off. They turned it off right before I started pushing. Next time I will go the same route.

  • I wanted to go med-free, but I had a 21 hour labor, and around hour 12 and 6-7 centimeters, I lost my shit. I got the epi and it was wonderful. Placement was easy, I could always feel my legs and move them myself, and I had no pain. She was sunnyside up, too. It wore off so quickly, I was walking pretty soon.

I never needed pitocin, and it didn't stall labor. It was a good experience, but I know it isn't always like that.

  • I had one and it worked but since he was sunny side up I felt every contraction in my rectum even with the epi.
I ended up needing emergency csection. So yeah. Glad I didn't labor 33 hrs without it when I ended up needing it anyway.

  • I had one, but it never worked properly. The only part that went numb was my left hip bone area....and that's clearly not what hurt! I felt everrrrrrrything.

  • I got one and it was amazing for the short while before I actually went into labor. Went from 3cm to 10 pretty fast after the epi.

  • Lots of sunnyside up babies!

@shank I had the button too, but my nurse did not warn me...so I pushed it! a lot. She did say it was a set dosage so after it ran out there would be no more.

I could not feel a darn thing and that was great, until I had to push - for 2 hours. Come to find out LO had her hand up next to her face so that was why I was having such a hard time, in addition to not feeling anything at all.

Next time, I am going to try to make sure no hands or feet are trying to come out first, and maybe ask for a smaller dosage if that's possible...

  • I also had a sunnyside up baby (Baby A), and my epi wasn't in right.  I felt EVERYTHING for 28+ hours, including every manual check, breaking my bag of water, and attempts to flip him.  I kept telling the nurses that I could feel everything, no one took it seriously.  They kept upping the dose, but it just drained into my back.  It was only discovered when I told the OB that I could feel her turning the baby to the left.  The anesthesiologist gave me a spinal and apologized repeatedly that no one checked it earlier.

FTR, I had an epi with my first DS and loved it.  The pain went away quickly and it wore off in recovery (emergency c/s).

  • I didn't want one. Let them bully me into getting one. Got one, and reacted poorly to it. Blood pressure tanked twice before they could even up the dosage. Went numb from my face down and felt like I couldn't breathe since I couldn't feel myself breathing. Absolutely fucking hated it. I did pit and back labor all night long without, and that was preferable.
  • @mishy2006 I felt all of the pressure, the tightening of the contractions and I felt her coming out. Crazy pressure. The placenta, too, as well as being stitched. It just didn't hurt. It was a painless, strange feeling. I only pushed for about 20 minutes.

  • I got one and it was great.  I got to take a nap.  I had the button an only pushed it once.  It wore off just in time to labor down and push.  My only regret was the anesthesiologist telling me about her 4 med-free births with, one with a breech baby.  Really?  That's the appropriate time to bring it up?

  • I had an epi and a sunny side up baby. The epi was a push button and it worked fantastically!! When the nurse said it was time to push my H pushed the epi button so I felt zero pressure or pain. I wish I felt a little something, but it was a positive experience and I plan on getting an epi for future baby(ies). And I applaud all women who had an epi or not and felt everything!

  • I had one, but I do not think it was working as well as it should, I was relieved of the contraction pain for maybe 30 - 40 minutes and then it came back and the pain/pressure was still pretty intense.

I felt pushing, felt crowning (I assumed a dulled version of the ring of fire), and felt her stitching me back up to the point where I screamed and asked for her to numb me up (she was surprised I felt the stitching).

I stood up to use the bathroom about 30 minutes later and was fine to walk.

  • I had always planned to get an epi and I got one and it was a great experience. They did warn me that a common side effect was feeling itchy all over, which I did get, but they gave me something for it. Soon after the itchiness subsided and I felt very comfortable. My DH and I were just about to take a nap but they came an checked me one more time and all of a sudden I was a 10 and ready to push! So we were very sad we didn't get to sleep. (We arrived at the hospital at 4:30 in the morning and I had no sleep the night before.) I couldn't feel anything at all, not even pressure. I was worried about pushing because I couldn't feel anything, but when I started pushing they told me I was doing great and it was as if I had done this before! I would absolutely get it again.

  • I didn't get one even though I had every intention of doing so. I was already 7 cm when I got to the hospital and progressed to 10 cm less than 5 minutes later. I had been to the hospital a few hours prior, but the nurse sent me home without checking.

I basically spent my 10 hrs of labor at home on my bed screaming while H paced back and forth trying to get me to eat a piece of toast.

I've always said that I will for sure get one next time, but after reading the stories I'm not so sure. I definitely had the urge to push, and even though it took 2 hours and I was hooked up to pitocin...it was definitely the least painful part. The pushing really took away from the contraction pain. Except for when she came out...that was pretty brutal. I've heard it called "ring of fire" many times, but I prefer to call it "vagina explosion." I think she broke my tailbone and I'm pretty sure you could have heard my scream from miles away.

  • I got one and didn't feel much of anything. I went through a whole dose and they refilled only because I was getting sent to the OR for a C section. Also had one with my first and they took it off of me so I could push.
  • I was induced on my due date. They placed the cervadil at 5:30 pm...I was at 4 cm for hours and at 7:00 am I was begging for the epi! The anesthesiologist came within 20 minutes and started placing the epi. I told the nurse that I had a huge sensation to push and she checked me. I was at a 9! The anesthesiologist said it did pay to push the drugs because it would not take effect in time...cue major freak out! Baby girl was born at 8:24am...I guess you would consider that with no epi...although we had to pay for the full procedure and got a sore back too!

  • Gas and air made me feel extremely sick. I still feel sick when I see it on tv. I can taste it all over again yuck.

The epi was fantastic. I kept pressing the button to top myself up.

We were also unny side up.

    Same here!

  • I had stadol and femerol. I loved it. It reaffirms my belief that narcotics should stay illegal....because I would take it recreationally if I could. If I hadn't been admitted at an 8 and my water had broken, id probably get an epi.

Oh yeah, I forgot, I had a "hit" of fentanyl before getting my epi... it was GLORIOUS!

I kept saying over and over to my Mom (my DH had run home at this point to let our dog out), how WON-DER-FUL I felt and how I should have gotten the drugs earlier.

  • I had an epi, and don't think I'd do it any other way. It was fantastic! I was induced, though, so I hope next time around I get the chance to see what contractions and labor are like without pitocin. I felt zero pain after the epi, but still plenty of pressure when it came time to push. I'd do it over again in a heartbeat!

  • I wanted to do med free but needed to be induced at 40+5 bc of a small year in my waters. I did 13hrs without then when the nurse checked me I hadn't progressed. I was pissed. I asked for the epi 30mim later and my body rejected it. I was flopping like a fish and ended up needing it turned off and was put on oxygen. Next time I will fight through it (hopefully without the pitocin). Epi fucking sucked.
  • I got an epidural and don't regret it in the least!  I went into labor with an open mind.  I decided early on that I would go as long without an epi as long as I could/wanted and then I would decide during labor.  The epi allowed me to sleep and was a positive experience.  Next time, I plan to do the same; labor on my own as long as I can and decide if/when I need it.
  • With my first I got one, and hated it! I couldn't move my legs. Felt like I was numb from waist down. Had major panic attack and made them turn it down. I felt pain but could live with that, it's labor it's suppose to hurt.(that's how I justified it).
With second did it without got something in the iv which let me relax enough to dilate the last 2 cm in like a minute, but did nothing for the pain. Recovery was so much better for me without epi.
  • I got one with my first and it was fantastic. DS was turned sideways and stuck. They needed to turn him manually while using forceps. I don't think I could have managed without an epi. I did not feel a thing and the nurses kindly told me when to push. DD came to fast so I wasn't able to have an epi I was sad. I agree with the pp who said its a "vagina explosion" I often refer to it as a volcano erupting horrible and I never want to do it again.
