Suggestions for baby carriers

What did you register for/use for your baby?  I am just beginning to research and thought Id start with the best source :)

Thanks for any thoughts!!

Re: Suggestions for baby carriers

  • the parenting boards would actually be a good source - since they are actually using theirs and can give you more info.

We used the Jeep one- and it worked great. We also had a Baby Bjorn someone gave us - it was fine- but IMO- not worth the $$$ if buying new... the Jeep one was just as good- and much cheaper.

i couldn't carry DS very long in it b/c he was really heavy and it hurt my back. DH used it more than I did.

  • I had a Moby that I loved for the first few months. Then ds just got too big for it, lol.

We also have a Bjorn that both dh and I could use from the first few weeks on...

I also had a sling that my friend bought me. That was my fav because I could literally tuck ds inside it no one would know I had a baby with me (seriously!) Everyone thought it was a big purse so no one bothered me about how cute my baby was or tried touching him =)

  • I'm planning on getting a Moby wrap at first - I've heard nothing but rave reviews from friends with infants. Later on we may look into a Baby Bjorn as well.
  • We used a baby bjorn with DS and both DH and I loved it. It is a little expensive, but we got it as a baby shower gift.
  • We had this one for DD and I loved using it:

We are registering for it again but we also registered for this one to use first when the baby is still really small:

  • I had a used Baby Bjorn and a Snugli front carrier for my DS.  I loved the Bjorn when he was really little and didn't want to be put down.  I bought the Snugli on a trip to Chicago, and wore him in it at the mall.  He LOVED it, but my back was KILLING ME at the end of the day.  He was 4 months old at the time. When he got older I started using a wrap, which is what I plan to use from the start with this baby.  :)
  • I started out with my baby bjorn which was awesome at first.  Especially when I could do my housework with him attached and he'd fall asleep.  And going to the mall and stuff was nice.  We had the one with back support and I really used it a lot.  I hated trying to take the infant carrier with a shopping cart because on top was unsafe (tipping hazard) and inside the main part took up too much space, so I bjorned him a lot then.....and will use it again guaranteed.

Then, a bit farther a long I bought a hotsling and I used that a lot with my son.  I will probably look at something like that sooner this time around.  But, the only problem with the sling versus my bjorn, is that in order to have the baby really secure, you have to pull some of the material overtop of the opposite shoulder which limits your movement (or if you move, it moves too).  So, it was fine most of the time in mostly a side carrying way and he even fell asleep in it once.

It was so nice having some help in carrying him because no baby wants in the stroller the whole time you are out and this way I had my hands free too.  I always threw them under the stroller to have when I needed one or the other.

  • I use the ERGO with DS and it's fantastic. ?We also have a Bjorn (the original style) and IMHO the Ergo is much more comfortable for me and DS. ?The Bjorn is very uncomfortable b/c all DS weight is on my upper back and shoulders. ?The advantage is that DS can face out. ?The Ergo is set up so that DS faces in and all the weight is at my waist/hips. ?I used the infant insert for the Ergo when DS was little, and that was ok, but it's much better now that he's bigger. ?

The Ergo is expensive. ?I've heard there are more recent styles of the Bjorn that help fix the back problems the original style has. ?HTH!!!?

  • I had a bjorn and it was nothing special...a waste of $75, imo.  I had a hotsling that was nice for when she was really little, but the BEST carrier I invested in is a Beco Butterfly.  They are awesome and soooo worth the money.  I carried Claire in it on my back in the summer, before I got pg, and at that point she weighed 24 pounds.  I could carry her for an hour and feel fine, and I'm a petite person.  Check out the forums on thebabywearer.com.  They were very helpful when I was researching carriers.  I thought I wanted an Ergo, but once I did my research and learned more about them, I found out that they are better for people who are average-size, and not petite people, whereas the Beco adjusts for smaller moms.  Learning that made my decision easy.

  • i literally spent 3 hours yesterday researching and asking questions in the 0-6 mo board...

I have decided on the Moby or the Didymos (which supposedly is just like the Moby but with organic and and much stronger/less stretchy fabric. ?it is much more expensive though so i think i'll try moby first) for the first few months.

We will also get the Ergo for when the baby is older. ?I thought i would be getting the Baby Bjorn first, but in my research yesterday read a few things about it not being great for the baby's spine the way their legs just hang...the Ergo give more support and the baby is "sitting" more with legs wrapped around you so it doesn't affect the spine.

I'm a little worried about how much time i spent on this...there are SO many other things to be purchasing right now:) ?haha...good luck!?
