Size discordance...did it get worse or better?

I had a growth scan today - 31w1d. At my last growth scan 4 weeks ago they were measuring exactly the same at 67%ile and no discordance obviously. Today, there was a 15% discordance - baby A was at 72%ile and baby b was 45%ile. They both look great, but wondering if this is a fluke that baby b is falling in percentiles while A is moving up? I know of course there is a range with the scans and can be way off. Did your babies discodance get worse as time went on or stay the same or improve?

Mine got worse but at delivery were a lot closer than they thought. It was still a pound different and they both lost over a pound while in the NICU but they know what is "too far" apart and what's safe. 15% is still really good. Mine were like 54% difference. Or something crazy like that.

  • Mine were di/di but yes the discordance did get bigger as my pg progressed. It's stayed the same since they were born - B outweighed A by 8oz at birth and it's prob close to 1.5lbs diff by now.

But also remember as they get bigger it's harder and harder to get an accurate growth scan bc they're do squished. I remember at one of my later u/s the tech basically guessing bc she couldn't see what she wanted to bc of lack of room.

  • I had a similar experience. It was somewhere in the early 30s weekswise but there was a size discordance around 18%. For them it seemed to be a fluke/one-time thing. By the next u/s, they were closer in size again and at birth one was 3 oz heavier and the other was 1/4" longer, so they were pretty similar.

  • Thanks ladies. I don't feel too nervous now and they're both looking really well. I was just surprised to see a difference...maybe more so that one is falling in percentile and the other gaining. I kind of expected they'd both grow on the percentile. I know they'll keep an eye on it and now I only have one more scan at 35 weeks since i have a c/s scheduled at 38. Though they'll keep checking if it seems even greater at 35.

    Thanks again ladies.

  • My growth scan on Monday (31w) showed a 20% discordance. Caroline (who has always been smaller) measured 4lbs 3oz and Oliver was 5lbs 2oz. The doctors said everything was fine that I just had a big baby and a really big baby, but that they did want to keep an eye on them because they may not be able to grow as well as they should due to running out of room.

  • Glad to know you're not feeling worried about it.
Mine grew at different rates on the pregnancy scans too, and where exactly a pound apart at birth. Now two years later they've pretty much evened out. They take turns weighing more and being taller though.

  • Mine are di/di as well so there's not much of a concern with discordance. I will say that the tech thought there was like a 10oz difference between them the other day and then got a better view or something and measured again and they're actually only about 3oz in difference.

  • Mine are mono/di, so growth discordance is an issue to be monitored. Plus one of mine has an SUA. That baby is smaller, and there was an 8% difference. They said that was actually great and could very possible even out as my pregnancy progresses. They said there is no concern as long as it's 20% difference or less.
