Baby Food Makers-Question for 2nd Time Moms

Hello!

It's been a while since I've written any posts on this board.  However, today I saw my baby moving in my belly for the first time (wow!) and it was a real kick in the pants to get moving on baby to-do list items.  Right now I am working on my baby registry and was looking at reviews on amazon for baby food makers.  I want to make my baby's food once they get to that stage.  I saw a negative review for the Baby Bullet that freaked me out--the reviewer said some of the parts tested positive for lead.  Therefore, I want to see if there are other brands that anyone is happy with?  Please let me know the brand and your experience with it. Thank you so much! :)

  • We did baby led weaning so I never made DD purees. She mostly ate what I ate from the beginning. I use this microwave steamer to cook veggies. https://www.amazon.com/Progressive-International-Microwavable-Mini-Steamer/dp/B0000CFPT2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1394413156&sr=8-1&keywords=Microwave+steamer

  • I just used a food processor we already had. Froze things in ice cube trays we also had and then stored it in ziploc bags in the freezer.

You dont need things baby specific to prep the food.

  • We just used our food processor and blender. They worked great. I never felt the need for a specialized baby food maker. The blender/food processor held a lot more, and I would make batches and freeze them in ice cube trays.

I have a baby bullet (will probably use it again just because I have it and the lead concerns seem a little blown out of proportion imo) but I would never spend the money on any special baby food maker again.  I agree with PPs about just using a food processor / blender.  The baby bullet does come with a milling blade that I used to grind up rice to make our own rice cereal (also not really necessary), but you could use a coffee grinder to do the same thing as well.  So, no real need for one!

  • We have a nutribullet that my husband wanted for shakes anyhow so I just used that. I froze mine in 1 oz trays but wish I had just gotten the cubes that hold like 4 oz and used those instead. I fought getting them out of the freezer trays and found I didn't really do like I had originally planned and made huge batches at once. I plan on BLW this time around though.

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

  • I have the baba baby cook and I liked that I could cook and purée in it. It was just easier for me to dump everything in let it cook purée and freeze.
  • I used the baby bullet and will probably use it again. We also use but for fruit smoothies sometimes.

I have the baby brezza.  It steams and automatically blends.  I used it with with my 2 boys and was very happy with it.  Don't think it was completely necessary though,  I could have easily gotten away with just using my food processor.
  • Ditto what a lot of others have mentioned. I already had a Cuisinart good processor and that was just fine for puréeing foos that was steamed. Froze them in ice cube trays and stored them in a Ziplock bag. An hour or two or prep made enough food for weeks!

Ditto PP- We just used our magic bullet. Worked awesome!
Although if you don't already have one, a steamer would be a good idea.
  • I used a blender, a hand held blender and a mini food processor. All of them worked well and I made all of DS's food. Never once bought a jar of baby food. Super easy!

Ditto! A steamer was a huge help, too!
  • I just used the magic bullet that I already had. It held more than the baby bullet and so I was able to make up bigger batches at one time.

  • I used the microwaveable veggie steamer from Pampered Chef ($10 for the large container) and I also have the matching manual food processor. Viola! Cheap, durable, lifetime warranty, and I can use it on SO much more than baby food!
  • We got a little ninja when we got married and it worked perfectly to make purees. I would make a big batch, pour it into ice cube trays, and freeze. I'm excited to make baby food again :)
  • I would just go with a regular food processor that you can use for other things as well. The mini size is helpful for smaller batches. I love my kitchen aid food processor

  • I just used our food processor, and she only ended up wanting purées for about a month before moving to finger food and eating what we eat.

  • We have the beaba babycook and I love it.  You can steam and then puree in the same container.  DS is 20 months so we don't really need it anymore for purees but I still use it to steam veggies for the whole family - I find it easier than using the stove and it fits just the right amount for the three of us.

  • I went to GFS and bought those mini plastic containers (think Jell-O shots) with the lids. I put the baby food in there and labeled them. Worked wonders!

We used our rice cooker that had a steaming tray. I used a potato ricer to break up the veggies. It worked great and clean up was really easy. And as PP mentioned, put in ice cube trays and then froze in freezer bags.

  • I had a Baby Brezza. It worked well..until it totally broke. Boo! It was also a pain in the neck to clean. Might just get a mini food processor this time.

  • I have an unopened Baby Breeza because I had intended on making baby food before I learned about other options (BLW). I wouldn't put to much thought into a baby food maker until you see where you are when baby is ready for solids.

  • Thank you to everyone for your responses.  :)
  • For people who froze the purées, how did you thaw? One by one in the fridge? The microwave?
  • I bought the Magic Bullet and if you don't mind making small portions then its perfect. This time around I am buying a blender to make larger portions.

  • I'll be using a Baby Bullet for this baby since I found one on clearance at Bed Bath & Beyond several months ago, but I used the regular Magic Bullet to make DS's food. It was cheaper and more versatile than the Baby Bullet. I was able to use it for the family after he was done with purees. I still use it for slushes, smoothies, spices, and sauces. I've even used it to grind coffee beans.

I tried a blender and a food processor before I settled on the Magic Bullet, but my blender was wimpy and couldn't puree anything that wasn't super runny and everything came out chunky with the processor.

  • I used the steam function and tray in my rice steamer to steam things and the Baby Bullet to puree. You could def use a food processor or blender. I bought a bunch of those colored Take and Toss bowls (the smaller ones) and froze those. I labeled them with circular colored labels. I usually took a few out at a time and let them defrost in the fridge. It all worked great!
  • How does everyone thaw their frozen purees? Micro? Hot water?
  • My mom bought me a food processor instead.  I use it several times a week still and my baby is 2.5.  I also used my regular magic bullet for quick things or smaller batches.

My advice is to skip the expensive "baby food makers" and buy the following items:
    - a good blender or food processor (comes in very handy down the line to shred veggies to add to toddler meals!)
    - silicone ice cube trays
    - fine mesh strainer
    - cheese cloth
    - vegetable steamer basket

  • I either used the cooker on the warm up stage, or like 5 seconds in the microwave. Because you freeze it in an oz or two containers they don't take long to warm up. If I planed a head I would just pull it out of the freezer and let it come to room temp during the day.

Glad to hear you like this - I got this at my shower! I liked the cook/puree-in-one feature, which is why I put it on my registry.

  • I have a stock pot with a large steamer insert; and 2 blenders, a Magic Bullet, and the Ninja. If we choose to make our own purees, which we're considering, I'm all set.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.

I thawed in the microwave. If I thought ahead sometimes I'd put a day's worth of containers into the fridge the night before so they were already thawed and all I had to do was zap them for a few seconds to warm them up.

This exactly for me. Awesome product but probably didn't "need" it like I thought I did.

  • My mom got me just a food chopper as a wedding gift and I plan on using that. I'm not sure if the baby ones are better for baby food or just to get your money but I plan on using mine and crossing my fingers that it works

    It's a BOY
