How to replace a night feeding with a bottle

This may be a stupid question, but I'm confused.  I'd like to pump and allow my husband to take over one of the night feedings.  How does this work without hurting my supply?  Wouldn't I also have to get up and pump while he gives the bottle in order to keep supply up?  In that case, what is the point?  How do others handle this?  I would love to get just a bit more sleep, but I'm not sure the best way to do it.

  • Yes, you would get up and pump while LO gets a bottle.

JMO but night feeds (for us) are the eadiest ones. DS wakes, I nurse him and he falls asleep nursing. We all go back to bed.

If I were going to pump and replace a feed, I would do a daytime one.

You have to pump at least as much/often as LO gets a bottle or your supply will suffer.

  • Yeah, I never understood when family and friends would say, "Just let DH give her a bottle overnight so you can get some rest."  I'd have to get up to pump to replace the feeding anyway, so . . . what is the point?

This is basically just the part you have to power through.  Eventually, LO will sleep longer stretches and then sleep through and you'll be able to get more rest.

Everyone is so full of "helpful" advice. People told be the same thing.

Unfortunately you have to educate yourself and stand up for yourself.

I don't know how many times I have had to say to someone (dh?) that I can't do X because it would hurt my supply.

  • I guess it did sound too good to be true! Thanks ladies.
  • Could you have your husband pick up baby, change baby's diaper if needed and hand baby to you so you don't have to get out of bed at least?
