Are you swaddling? Update

either day or night? My hospital frowned upon swaddling, just wondering what everyone is doing?

They too warned against overheating.  I don't think mine would sleep very well with his startle reflex I think would wake him.  I knew this about this hospital and brought my own Velcro swaddle blankets and they still weren't too happy about it.  So I wasn't swaddling him in the hospital and then they took him to do the hearing test and his body temperature was down so when he came back they had swaddled him in a blanket and then had my swaddle over it.  ????  Ok!

  • I'm surprised they frowned upon it. I'm curious their reason too

I try to swaddle at night with one of the halo sacks but he fights it hardcore

    Edit - I can't read
  • We swaddle at night and at "naptime" (when older sister is napping).
I'm surprised your hospital doesn't approve. Like pp if was recommended by our hospital and ped.

  • All three of my babes have hated the swaddle after about 4 days old. They don't like being restricted.

  • Both of my kids hated being swaddled. I was never very good at it anyway, so I guess that was a good thing. I don't plan to swaddle this one either. @Anneplusone‌ interesting article. I hadn't heard that, but I have long felt that swaddling could lead to overheating. I feel the same way when DH snuggles me in the middle of the night. **but I'm a bad ass - I use a drop-side crib still. :ar!
  • We swaddle at night only. Our hospital did too, and taught us how to do it, but they said they don't really recommend it after 2 weeks. He loves being swaddled but he did get out of it twice in the night which worried me. I'll be stopping on Monday, his 2 week bday.
  • I clicked yes, but I really have no idea. Never had a baby before. So whatever she wants is what I'll do. Pretty sure that's how this parenting thing works.. ;)

  • In my childcare class, I felt VERY uncomfortable trying to swaddle with the giant blankets - even with a lot of practice, I never quite got it as tight as a lot of other parents (dads included), so I knew I didn't want to mess with the big, swaddle blankets.  We only purchased swaddling blankets that have snaps or velcro that baby can't loosen (so the risk of loose blankets by the face is moot). That being said, we're going to wait and see how she takes to it, I won't force her to be swaddled if she really hates it.

  • DS hates being swaddled if he's awake. But once he falls asleep, I immediately swaddle him because it's the only way he'll actually sleep for a decent amount of time.

  • Does anyone know if there's an age limit on the swaddleme type things? I may get a couple, but not if it's not recommended after a few weeks or something.
  • I swaddle and gasp- use a blanket in the crib. We kinda have to since we battle low temperature with Sloan. I'm literally just doing what they did at the hospital. So far temps have been good.
  • Pro-swaddling here.

  • I swaddle at night and we gave a few different kinds...halo sleep sacks, swaddleme, miracle blankets, and A&A swaddle blankets. Twins will be 10 weeks old (1 week adjusted) and I'm continuing to swaddle.

Gasp!!! Lol. As I said, (and @FarmBoysWife said too) I don't swaddle. I have used a blanket for both kids...they've never pulled the blanket over their heads. If anything, they squirm away from the blanket. Both of my kids turn into little furnaces when they are tired/sleeping. I tried a sleep sac with DS and he was soaking wet in the middle of the night so we only tried it a couple times before deciding to stay with blankets.
  • We swaddle with arms out at night only.  It's the easiest way to keep him warm.  Our hospital actually recommended not swaddling too, because of the risk of them loosening the blankets.  He stays pretty still though as long as his arms aren't confined.

  • That's strange I thought hospitals always swaddled their babies. Mine needed to be swaddled for the first couple days or shed freak out but now she prefers not to. But when she was swaddled she was only in a diaper underneath and never was too warm
  • B hated being swaddled so we never did swaddle him, but we weren't against it.
I will swaddle this LO with a receiving blanket, only if s/he likes it.

  • With my toddler we tried swaddling but she always broke out of it, so we gave up. With this one we are using the swaddleme, which I love , but she's going to start getting hot in it real soon.

  • @FarmBoysWife ...Question...out of curiosity, since this is my first baby and I feel clueless on the topic, are you worried at all about LO getting too accustomed to sharing a bed with you? I've noticed DS definitely sleeps so much better when he falls asleep next to me or on my chest, but then I get worried about him getting used to it and never wanting to sleep without me. So then I put him in the bassinet...and sure enough, he doesn't sleep for very long. So I just feel stuck. Just curious what your thoughts are.

  • I'm terrified to actually swaddle with blankets, but we use the halo Sleep Sack every night. Our pedi said it was safe to use.

  • I swaddle the twins with receiving blankets or swaddleme blankets depending on what's clean! Otherwise neither of them sleeps for any real period of time!

  • I still do the hospital method too - swaddle, blanket and then a weight on the top. I have even been tempted to pull out the cushion that wraps around his feet. This boy likes to be bound up. He actually stays swaddled all day and flips out when it's undone. He falls asleep as soon as I wrap his arms.

Also yesterday he started flipping over when unswaddled. He flails and basically knocks himself onto his belly. I guess because he's so tiny.
  • @FarmBoysWife Thanks for sharing. I like the idea of daytime naps in appropriate places and nighttime sleeping in bed. I might try that out :)

  • I voted 'yes', but I'm not swaddling with blankets. I'm going to use the sleep sacks where LO's arms are free....it just seems the safest way to me. if it's cold, I'll layer a long sleeve sleep and play underneath.

DS always had to be swaddled due to his falling reflex. He was swaddled for months!!! DD on the other hand was not into it from the get go so even in the hospital I would unwrap her to make her more comfortable even though the nurses frowned upon it
  • I agree with PP's. When I said 'safe' I meant that I'm using the sleep sacks in place of swaddling so if LO decides to roll over he can roll back (his arms will be free) and we all know heavy blankets can be dangerous, so those are out. I do have a few of the swaddle-sacks given as gifts at the shower, so if LO startles himself awake those might be an option but only for a few weeks...I think I'd be too nervous to use them for long. that's just me, being the nervous FTM. I have a friend who swaddles her 5 month old with lightweight blankets and she is doing just fine :)

  • With DS1 we swaddled until he was probably close to 8 or 9 months old. He had an incredibly strong startle reflex and was a terrible sleeper.

We are swaddling the twins with receiving blankets and wrapping an additional blanket around them to keep their temps up. They sleep much better that way.

@sebullows‌ DD#1 LOVED being swaddled so we swaddled her in blankets or swaddlemes until she could roll over and it wasn't safe anymore. She was about 5 months.

  • @DisneyAddict1‌, for whatever reason, LO will sleep soundly without being swaddled in the daytime. Nighttime is a different story. I find swaddling a huge hassle so I hope we can break him of it soon.
  • LO screams unless he's swaddled. Stinker.

Our hospital is all about the swaddling with an extra blanket on top. They're actually a little vet board, I think. They keep asking where her hat is. I'm like its march in Kuwait. It's 30 degrees Celsius. We didn't bring a hat. -_-
We'll probably keep swaddling for night time once we go home, but she doesn't really seem to care either way

  • Swaddling at night. I hear it's better not to do during the day so that they can move around freely and develop those leg and arm muscles
