Amazon prime rate hike?

Anyone else see they're raising the rate to 99 dollars from 78? I was on the fence about renewing as it was, now I'm really thinking it's not worth it unless they offer some sweet renewal incentives.

Re: Amazon prime rate hike?

  • I got an e-mail about it this morning.  Honestly, with as often as I use it, I think it will still be worth it.

  • I got the email this morning as well. $99 is definitely still worth it for me.

  • I saw that on CNBC but never got an email. We order all the time so it's worth it for us but damnit I'm no supposed to renew until April 6th!

  • Woah. That seems really expensive to me. I can almost always find comparable prices including shipping or with free shipping at ebay, target or walmart (ship to store, but still worth it for how seldom I actually buy something from Walmart. Usually just a bulk purchase of overnight diapers every few months)

  • They still offer free shipping for an order over $35, right?  I've never paid for prime, but I never pay for amazon shipping either, because I just wait until my purchases add up to their free shipping price.  $99 seems expensive to me too, esp if you're just a diapers purchaser, since those are always over 35 bucks.
  • Ugh, that sucks. I'll still renew because I have an Amazon addiction, but that does stink.

Definitely still worth it for us.  I probably order at least 1 item a week from Amazon prime, plus subscribe and save, amazon mom, etc.

  • Totally worth it, in my opinion. I'm surprised they didn't do this sooner. We use it all the time, so no doubt we will keep it.

  • I also don't use the free streaming or the ebook (their ebook library is lacking) but I went from regular prime to student and that one is only going up to $49, which I don't think is that bad considering how much I order from there.  I have to talk to DH about it....the stuff we buy on subscribe and save could be bought at actual stores for comparable prices, it's just more of a hassle.

  • I was complaining about that in the UO. It will still be worth it for the amount of shopping we do there and the convenience. I could find comparable prices if I used more coupons and shopped around, but I don't have time for that. I will pay the $100 for convenience alone.

  • I'll still renew, it's worth it for us. MH jokes that amazon delivers something here every other day. He's only 1/2 wrong.

  • I'm just glad I don't have to make a decision until 2015!

I was on a roll for a while. The UPS guy would talk to me for a few minutes each day about the weather, etc. He now knows to not ring the doorbell when my mom's car is in the driveway. He just leaves the shipment on the porch. No shame.

Sometimes I think I use Amazon as more of a convenience.  I could get a lot of the items at the grocery store etc. but it's so much easier to just click buy and have it here in 2 days.  I'm not sure if I'm going to keep it yet.  However, I would say I order stuff on average 1 - 2x per week.

ETA:  After talking with DH about it, he did bring up a good point.  $99/12 = $8.25 per month.  By only ordering one to two items per month you are most likely getting the benefit of Prime.

  • Oh I like this math becaue sometimes I shop online to limit my other spending at the store - and $8.25 is probably easily what I save in a month with gas and other spending..
