Short version: Elizanne "Ellie" Olivia was born via c-section at 6:04am on Thursday, 3/13. She weighs 6lbs, 8oz and is 19.5 inches long. She is perfect and healthy.
Long version: I started having contractions at 10:15 Tuesday night. They continued to increase in frequency, duration, and intensity so we found ourselves in L&D at 3:15am. Following my NST which looked great and showed contractions coming about every 3 minutes, I was shocked to only be dilated to a 1.5. Rather than send me home right away, the nurses had me walk the floor for a little over an hour, but there was no change after that so they sent me home. Contractions continued throughout the day, and though they became less frequent and regular, their intensity continued to increase. By late afternoon we called my OB to check in, but they felt I wasn't showing a regular enough pattern at that point to come back in. By this time, I hadn't slept in over 30 hours and had been having consistent painful contractions for about 17. We decided to try and distract me with a movie in bed, and contractions really picked up. After they had been coming every 3.5-5 minutes and lasting over a minute each time, we headed back in to L&D. At this point, the NST didn't look as good, though still not worriesome. Again, I was shocked to find out there had been no change in dilation, and I started to cry. They had me hobble the floors for another hour and checked again. When there still wasn't any change, the nurse helped stretch me along to a two and talked the doctor into admitting me. Cue epidural I wasn't planning on having, but 40 hours of being awake and however many hours of painful contractions later, I was ready for it. Once I was numb and able to relax, I progressed to a 5 in about an hour. But then I stalled at 5, and LO's heart rate was dropping with every contraction. None of the usual methods were having any effect on that, so they decided to break my water. When they did, there was blood in it, so the decision up move to c-section was made. I'm going to admit, I did some more crying at this point even though I believed the doctors this was the best thing. It also turned out that there was maconium inside which was contributing to her distress. Now I'm just trying to heal, and learn to breastfeed. We're doing alright as a team on that one. Anyway, my husband and I are beyond in love, and I am just enchanted watching the two of them together.
