Independent play

How much time do your kids spend playing alone vs playing with you?

Re: Independent play

  • Pretty much what @annieluvsjordan‌ said.

  • I think learning through play is really important, so I try to let DS take the lead when he plays as much as possible (like have him direct the play rather than me). similar to what PPs said, sometimes he plays by himself in spurts, other times he comes over to show me things and I play with him, or he'll bring over books he wants me to read. he has definitely gotten better at entertaining himself over the past couple of months. here's an article about encouraging independent play in toddlers
  • Thanks for the replies. I am probably overthinking this too much. I feel guilty either way... If I play with him constantly I feel like I'm not teaching him independence and if I let him play alone for a while I feel guilty. I know this is ridiculous but I thought I'd ask anyway.

  • When I was staying at home over the summer, DD had independent play in her crib for 20 minutes twice a day. It was a regular part of our daily routine.

During the school year, she has been in daycare and there hasn't been much time for independent play.  I may put t back into our routine on summer weekends since she will be with me at home a bit more.
  • Jacqueline is good at independent play, but only when we sit on the floor with her. She will play alone and then bring stuff over, give a hug or kiss and then go back to playing, but if either of us are on furniture, she wants to be up with us. I recently invested in bigger cushions because the floor is not comfortable.

  • I sit on the floor with DD and we will 'make food' in her kitchen or read. She has her moments where she is doing her own thing and is content in that- we just got her a baby doll and she carries it around and feeds it and puts it down for a nap.

I over think it too! I'm always like I wonder what she learned today?
