If you had Gestational Diabetes, help!

I just got finished with my 3 hour GTT and I failed. They're referring me to the Diabetes center, but in the meantime I want to get an idea of what I should be avoiding. Other than the obvious candy, soda and other sweets what should I focus on avoiding and eating more of?

Any suggestions from anyone with any diabetic experience would be greatly appreciated! :)

  • Keep an eye on carbs in general: bread, pasta, fruit, juice. Juice has at least the same amount of carbs as pop. Learn how things like bread vs potatoes vs pasta affect you. Some people can't eat pasta without going high. I personally need 1/2 my regular insulin when I eat pasta.

  • I did with Ethan.

The trick is to limit carbs, not avoid them.  You want to eat a small amount of carbs throughout the day to keep everything even, rather than having spikes.

I did peanut butter toast every morning with a small glass of milk.  The I would eat a small amount of carbs or protein every two hours.  I did peanut butter crackers, string cheese, a serving of wheat thins(per the box) or a piece of fruit (there are some that are better than others).  My dietician said to look for things with 20g of carbs or less.

The big things to avoid for me were pizza of any kind, bagels, juice- pretty much anything with a really high sugar or carb content.  There are low carb breads and pastas that you can eat in moderation.  I did a lot of sandwiches for lunch and a meat, non-starchy veggie, plus a small amount of pasta, bread or potato with dinner.

I'm trying to think of eveyrthing but, if you have specific questions, I can probably answer them for you.

  • Oh, my precious pasta! I hope I can find a good low carb pasta because pasta and I go way back!

Thanks ladies! That helps a lot!

    Dreamfields.  YWIA.
  • My OB put me on the ADA diet and gave me a handout.  I still have it and can email it to you if you would like.  I switched OB's in the middle of GD drama.  The first put me on insulin and didn't even try to control it with diet.  The second took me off the insulin and put me on the ADA diet.  It worked wonders!  GL, it really isn't too hard, you just have to figure out the right combos of food for you!

I have no clue if this is a good substitute carbs-wise, but you should look into spaghetti squash. We accidentally grew some in our garden last year and it was actually pretty good, and relatively simple to prepare as well!
  • I had it with Colton and I'm pretty sure I'll have it with this one too. I avoided all sweets. Peanut butter was my savior. I had it with bananas and apples, on toast or crackers. The best advice the dietitian gave me was to eat a carb with a protein and I did really good on it. You can still eat your pasta but make sure you have a small portion and you pair it with a protein.

Are they referring you to someone to get you on a plan? Mine was just diet controlled but I tested my blood 3x a day. Testing your blood isn't as bad as it sounds. Just think of the end result and it will get you through the hard days.
  • @purplegem11‌ they are referring me to a diabetes center to learn about diet and checking blood sugar.

Thanks again everyone! All of your insight is very helpful!!

  • I had it and like a pp said, peanut butter is an amazing sweet substitute. I literally ate a jar a week by myself. I would walk past the pantry, back track to a spoon, and go eat a spoonful...it was slightly ridiculous, but got me through :)
