Do your kids eat fish?

Since it's lent and we don't eat meat on Fridays im trying to come up with some more meatless meal ideas. What kind of fish do your kids eat and how do you prepare it? My kids will eat this almond crusted flounder that they have at our grocery store, its got a similarity to breaded chicken so they like it. But we've tried salmon before and they wouldn't eat it. They tend to be your typical picky toddlers. I hate making 2 meals so I'm trying to come up with new ideas.

  • I make parmesan crusted tilapia and DD loves it! It's super easy to make too, Prep and all it's ready in about 25 mins. Here's the recipe I use:

  • My oldest DD LOVES fish. DS is OK about it and the baby has been hit or miss. We're in Wisconsin so we have a lot of Friday fish fries at restaurants with various white fish (cod, haddock, perch) and all the kids will eat that. They also really like fresh pan fried fish when we're on vacation at the cabin. One of DD's favorite things is "fish boil," AKA poor man's lobster. You boil haddock, red potatoes, and onions in a big pot of water with salt and a little vinegar and then serve it with melted butter. It sounds weird and doesn't look super appetizing, but it's SOOOO good. It's basically the recipe below, but I think mine says to also add a tablespoon or so of vinegar to the water, and I don't use Old Bay. The kids like it plain.

They also eat fish sticks. :)

  • It depends. They'll both eat mild white fish, like Tilapia or flounder. And they've both eaten Salmon, but they won't eat all salmon. The salmon they've both eaten has been good quality wild caught salmon, either grilled or smoked and even then they won't always eat it.

This is my favorite recipe for Tilapia - I haven't tried it with DS yet but DH will eat it and he usually hates all fish. It is so quick and easy too.

  • I've made fish sticks out of salmon and they like them. With ketchup of course :-)
Also, one a week, we do a simple baked fish with a wedge of lemon, rice and peas. It varies week to week but my five year old usually eats it and my toddler had recently been trying it more. We like turbot.
Also, they both eat shrimp. I make a saffron rice and shrimp dish that the gobble up.
  • Not sure how old your LOs are. My DS likes tilapia - I just sprinkle a lemon seafood rub on it and bake it. He is okay with salmon but doesn't love it. When he was younger he would eat fish sticks but not anymore. He also likes shrimp.

You can also just do vegetarian meals on Fridays - cheese pizza, meatless pasta dishes, salads, etc. My DS loves all sorts of beans so sometimes we have vegetarian chili.

DS will eat salmon and tilapia. He loves tilapia with a little lemon pepper seasoning, sauteed in olive oil. DH and I like it blackened, both easy to make and not really like I'm making different meals. I keep a bag of frozen tilapia filets in the freezer at all times! They defrost super fast. For salmon, our favorite is this recipe: https://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Grilled-Salmon-with-Crunchy-Sweet-Mustard-Vinaigrette-109542 Instead of putting the sauce on DS's fish, I'll give him a little to dip it in. ETA: Other meatless meals we do - make you own pizzas (messy, but so fun), veggie quesadillas, grilled cheese and soup, we just tried black bean and sweet potato tacos the other night, those were good.

  • Mine love salmon, we just put some olive oil on it and broil it until done. Kiddo can put away 1/3 lb of salmon (before cooking) at dinner on top of the rest of his food (veggie and tortellini). Kiddo is not overweight, just really loves broiled salmon.
Daycare feeds them lightly breaded white fish of some sort and apparently he loves that too. The rest of the kids don't really like it and apparently he'll have the uneaten seconds of the other kids as his 3rd and 4th servings.
  • I made salmon patties and DS tried one, so that was promising. I like to make fish tacos, and sometimes I use fish sticks for those or just bake some white fish with cumin and lime juice.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • I haven't given DS fish yet.  I don't eat seafood of any kind so it's not something that I serve.  I think fish tacos or sticks could be worth a shot for a 2 year old.  GL!

  • Good question. My 5 yr old eats fish & chips and fish sticks.
My lil guy has tried salmon but nothing else. I want him to really like fish so I'm going to try tilapia!!

  • Both kids eat fish sticks, but I don't think that is what you are looking for. DD doesn't eat any other meat right now. If you are looking for meatless outside of fish, my kids love falafel or hummus for dinner.

  • I thought my 2-year-old would go for fish sticks, but those haven't been a hit. He's a huge fan of salmon recently, though. This is the first recipe I made for him - https://www.kraftrecipes.com/recipes/parmesan-baked-salmon-75528.aspx

I let him crush up the ritz crackers by putting them in a bag and giving him his toy hammer. He liked that, and then I let him sprinkle them on top. That may have helped him try it for the first time.

I'm jealous of all the responses.  We go meatless on Fridays for Lent and I have the same dilemma.  I had planned on making DS a separate meal (or portion of meal) but based on the responses I might encourage him to eat fish with us.  Right now all he'll eat is fish sticks and fried shrimp.

If you are looking for a great lenten meal I made these last week (w/o the salsa) and they were awesome

Do your kids eat shrimp? That's legit for meatless Fridays - my husband cooks it up in a coconut curry. My kid also eats white fish in the same curry, but maybe shrimp's an easier sell.

Also, McDonald's promotes their Filet-o-Fish like crazy during lent - I bet your kids would like that :) They even add a double filet to their menu for lent.

Oh! You can also do salmon burgers - take canned tuna or salmon, mix it up with onions, seasoning, quinoa or breadcrumbs, and an egg. Roll into patties and pan fry. Pretty good! I make a yogurt cucumber sauce to go with it. My kid liked that. I normally don't like fish but I can eat them in burger form.

My kids are big fish & shrimp eaters. You can also consider cutting the fish into orzo, or small pasta. I make orzo add pan cooked veggies, salt, pepper , lemon juice & basil and after cooking salmon break it into pieces and add it to the orzo mixture. Shrimp scampi is requested by the boys at least once a week. Fish tacos are hot with them, too.

  • Mine like tilapia also, though some nights they'll suddenly insist they hate it...par for the course right :).  They also really like good old tuna salad! We usually give it to them on crackers, they enjoy that.
  • Baked Salmon (glaze with honey or mix of mustard and honey). Tilapia - fried or baked. Actually fried most white fish - drench in flour, then dip in a scrambled egg then fry in a bit of oil. Let drain on a paper towel.
