March 2014 Moms

Scariest mom fail

Zack is a very alert baby and loves to spend time in his bouncer chair thing. So today, I let him sit in it in the living room while DS1 (he's 2.5 for the mobile people) helped me clean. I brought a couple dishes to the kitchen and started filling the sink up with water. I was out of the living room literally two minutes.

Next thing I know, he's pulling in my shirt and smiling, saying "Baby! Baby night night!" I poke my head into the living room and see that he had piled pillows and blankets on top of Zack. Head to toe. I freaked out, ran to him and pulled everything off. He just looked up at me, rolled his eyes, and went back to sleep. DS1 was scared by my freak out and was hysterical so I had to console him (while trying to not hyperventilate myself) and explained very explicitly (for the millionth time) that we don't cover the baby.

He apologized to both me and Zack and I apologized for scaring him. I've never felt like such an awful mom. I really thought he would be okay without my attention for a few minutes but apparently I raised a ninja baby. Needless to say, this will never EVER happen again. I'm still shaking about it.

  • Oh my goodness, that is scary! Glad he is ok! My fear is that I'm going to drop LO at some point...

  • And that was one of the reasons I wanted to share this. The first time around, I didn't have to worry about anything like this so this kind of thing never crossed my mind.

  • DD (almost 18mo) wants to cover up DS, too. She likes to pull the blanket off his legs to see his "toes" and doesn't notice if she flips it up over her face. I've never left the room but I'm still trying to gauge how far away I can get when he's in the RnP and she's playing in the same space. She's usually gentle, but she's whacked him on the head a couple of times and tried to "share" some toys by putting them on his head. I tell DS every day that I'll do my best to protect him. ;)

I have this fear too :(

@SamJustice‌ thanks for sharing, what a scary experience but I'm glad your older one wanted to show off to you what he did!
Same. Or that I'm going to slip going down the stairs while holding dd.

  • I've been worrying about this too. Dd is 2.5 and loves dumping all of her stuffed animals into her bed like a giant Scrooge McDuck money pool.
So naturally I'm worried about her trying to turn babys bassinet into a stuffed animal pool as well.
Luckily I've got a 9 yr old to help body guard baby from her big ninja sister.

Oh and she can now open doors yikes!
  • Scary! DS1 (almost 3) loves blankets so I'm waiting for that to happen to us. He did give me a big scare one day doing something else. I had one twin in the nursery changing their diaper and left the other twin in the bouncer in the living room while DS1 watched Mickey. I heard the twin in the living room start to cry so I called out to DS1 I would be right there. I get there to find him picking the baby up! I freaked out and ran over there, trying to keep my voice as calm as possible. Thankfully he had their head supported! We have now shown him how to offer a pacifier instead.

  • All of the above is a huge fear of mine, especially DS tipping over the rock 'n' play.  I'm hoping he will "get it" a little more once she is here...And my DS is a ninja.  It should be an interesting few first weeks!

  • You are not a bad mom. In his mind, he was helping out and like you I'll have the same thing to deal with at home. I already told DH, we can not leave dd and ds alone together. It's a learning experience, again, for everyone.

When we put the pack n play together, I didn't think anything of it either. Dd started playing with it, with her doll. She put her to sleep in the newborn napper, then went and grabbed her blanket and put it on her "baby" doll right over its head and left it there.

That was an eye opener for me.
