Charlie Horses

OK, no idea what to do next. I have had the most awful Charlie horses in both my calves for the last three nights! First thought was that maybe I wasn't drinking enough water, so I upped that. Then I thought calcium, but they are back again tonight! It's so bad I can't relax or fall asleep. :( I feel like there's a knife in my leg. I'll bring it up with the OB, but I don't go in until next week. Suggestions?

  • I can't do bananas. I vomit every time. What else has potassium?

  • Hmm, looks like we'll be eating white bean chili and making sweet potato fries! That was a good suggestion. I hasn't thought about OTHER foods with potassium, I've always just taken multivitamins because bananas are the potassium food. Lol. I was surprised to find tuna and OJ on the list too!

  • It could also be a magnesium deficiency.  I've had problems with legs cramps my entire life until someone told me about magnesium.  Within a few nights of using magnesium lotion the cramps were gone.  My OB said it was safe during pregnancy and he was excited to hear about the lotion because he is always telling people to take magnesium pills but lotion absorbs better in your body.  You can also soak in Epsom salts (obviously in not too hot water) as it is a great source of magnesium.

  • Avocados are supposed to be another good source of potassium. I think dates are, too?

I would occasionally get Charlie horses while pregnant too. I don't ever remember getting them while not pregnant. Mine occurred at night, when I first went to bed. My doctor told me to flex or point my toes. I can't remember which. One way would feel better and the other way would hurt really bad. I would advise proceeding with caution until you figure out which way is which. Good luck!
