16dpo - a bunch of symptoms - but BFN!

Hey everyone!

I'm 16dpo and have been taking HPT like it's going out of style - every day for a week now.  All BFN.  I should buy stock in FRER and ept HPT companies by this point.  I have weird cramping, that feels like waves rather than the double-over-in-pain cramps that I typically get when AF comes.  I have had lower back pain, I'm lightheaded, dizzy, and have waves of nausea.  I'm very, very hungry, but at least one meal a day, once I start eating, I get too sick feeling to continue.  I try to drink liquids to stay hydrated, but I have to consciously remind myself to do so - and it's hard getting down.  Stuffy nose for a week.  I had very light spotting (brown) from 7-11dpo.  My CM is still there and not "dry."  Sometimes it's white, sometimes it's clear.  The only traditional symptom is doesn't seem I have are boobie symptoms, but I typically don't feel anything during PMS for that anyways.  AF was due two days ago.

I'm not telling DH until I know for sure because we're not TTC and he's not ready yet (he will be if it happens!).  But I don't want to freak him out until I am sure.

My doctor is awesome, but is telling me to take HPT until something happens.  So blood work is out right now.

I just want to know one way or another.

Any advice?  Suggestions?  Similar stories?

A negative test means not pregnant at this time. You're probably just getting sick. Have you been temping to know that you're 16 DPO?

  • I got off Depo in July, and have been charting everything since I'm not on any BC.

I've been charting my cycle for a few months now.  When I had EWCM, I charted.  Plus the ovulation cramps I typically get.  And the dates line up appropriate to my typical cycle.

I'm very sensitive to changes in my body.  I doubt I have a cold or the flu.  I don't have other cold or flu symptoms.  Plus, I don't have a fever.

Has anyone had BFN and gotten symptoms like mine?  Any ideas?

But are you TEMPING? That is the only way to actually confirm that you have ovulated.
And ok fine, you aren't getting sick. You're probably pregnant, despite getting a bunch of BFNs.
  • Sounds like you had some bad spaghetti.

    Yeah.  When I wasn't pregnant.

BFN = not pregnant.  It's not a conspiracy by EPT to get you to buy more tests.  You aren't pregnant.  Sorry.

  • If you're going to test a lot, dollar store tests or Wondfos will save you some money. But WTAF at assuming your partner will suddenly be ready for a baby if you're KTFU. I hope you're using a reliable form of BC until your partner is actually ready to TTC.
  • Temping is not the only way to determine ovulation. According to this article, put out by the National Institutes of Health, using BBT was less reliable that daily cervical scoring. I know this is only one peer reviewed article, but there is more research on the website. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3884396

Also, false negative pregnancy tests are possible. Read https://pregnant.thebump.com/getting-pregnant/fertility-ovulation/qa/false-negative-on-pregnancy-tests.aspx for another woman's similar experience and read https://www.early-pregnancy-tests.com/pregnancy-test-false-negative.html\ for possible reasons for false negatives.

    Also try https://www.webmd.com/baby/guide/pregnancy-tests

The last articles aren't to get your hopes up! Pregnancy tests are usually about 97% accurate. I posted them to maybe help you understand your pregnancy test better and to know a false negative is possible, though unlikely. Notice the WebMD article says it's best to take a pregnancy test a week after your missed period and with your first morning pee. This is because you may not have a very sensitive test or you may not have as high of level of hCG you need to test positive.

It's awesome that you know your body so well! When I came off my birth control I could have sworn I was pregnant because I had never experienced such strong pregnancy symptoms with just PMS, but it was just my body adjusting to being off birth control and I wasn't pregnant.
I hope this helps! I found the information really helpful! Good luck!
  • But I would like to add, tracking BBT with cervical scoring is useful. It's always useful to have more information.
  • @Joy2611 - The reason the article is only a few sentences is because it's the abstract; it summarizes the research article. Because this is a study that is peer reviewed and written by three professions, you can rest assured that each participant understood how to perform the task they were assigned - charting BBT and documenting cervical mucus. Each participant was then monitored throughout the study. Though, it is not written in the abstract, I know this because it is peer reviewed and would not have passed the review process without it. This study took place for 46 cycles - almost 4 years.

@WhoCanItBeNow - Nothing better to say? I assume you didn't even read what was actually in the articles. I'm trying to expand some people's knowledge. Unless someone tells me that they're an ObGyn, I will continue to post reliable sources. I've seen people be told in earlier threads that you shouldn't dislike something just because you don't agree with it. I would like to reiterate that statement.

@NariaDreaming- I know the difference between CONFIRM and PREDICT. Several people here told the OP that she doesn't know when she ovulated without temping (because she said she is 16DPO). I'm saying that BBT confirms that ovulation occurred, but it's not needed to determine when she ovulated. It's actually not accurate when it comes to PREDICTing ovulation. Americanpregnancy.org agrees that you can have a period without ovulating due to a build up of the uterine lining that can no longer sustain itself or due to a drop in estrogen and that the best way to CONFIRM ovulation is BBT.

I would like to throw in my conjectures now - Because the OP is having regular periods, she is almost certainly ovulating, unless she's on birth control that she forgot to tell everyone about. OP also clearly stated that she's charting everything, ever since she came off birth control, after several posters asked if she's charting BBT.
I think the new posters in the forum should be trusted a little more and provided with more understanding. They're new and may not know exactly what to say, and that's when we should ask for clarification, as was done, but without the judgement being passed that new posters are idiots. I know from experience, because I was totally embarrassed to ask when the first official day of a period was when I was first lurking on the forum. I was embarrassed because I'm not completely ignorant, I'm just new at the TTC thing, and I couldn't find an official answer with a Google search fast enough to suit me when trying to determine how long my last cycle was in order to begin charting. Yes, I'm new to this forum, but I'm not new to using other forums on other sites.

  • Don't be mad because I'm smarter.

I didn't say TB and the other article are reliable, I just thought they were more on your level than the NIH.
