Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

New - Bottle/Brushing Dilemma

Hey there - new to this board (haven't been on in quite a while). My son just turned 1 yesterday and I'm afraid I got us in the bad habit of having a bottle right before bed. Routine is bath, pajamas, bottle, story, then bed. Unfortunately this also means he's not getting his teeth brushed after bottle. :-(

So, clearly I need to change this. Anyone have suggestions for weaning off the bedtime bottle? Working in the brushing should be (relatively) easy after that. I could just do it during or right after his bath.

I have a lot of anxiety about this, lol. Thanks ladies!

Re: New - Bottle/Brushing Dilemma

  • I would just do it after the bottle. As he gets older and you wean from the night time bottle then change up the routine.

DD#2 just turned 1. She is BF and only has two teeth. Before bed I just use a wash cloth for now. As she gets older I will use a real tooth brush and move brushing to right after bath. I did this with DD#1.

We play with a tooth brush after breakfast for now.

  • I weaned BF to bottles to Sippy cups.  Once we got off bottles I only allowed water up stairs in her sippy.  DD#1 gets her last sip of milk down stairs..only water up stairs.  I think this was around 16 months.
