Where did you find your NB photographer?

So my DH and I are photographers who do mostly weddings/portraits/business right now but we are wanting to expand into NB. We have had a few sessions we did for friends of the family but ideally would like to offer very inexpensive sessions (100-150 for 3-4 hour session, we have the props, and all rights to photos and can print online through a private gallery to a high quality lab or on your own) to increase our portfolio. I thought this would be a great place to poll for where you found your photographer (I.e. Website, magazine, your old wedding photographer, etc) to see where we could be marketing. Obviously when our own LO comes she will be quite busy posing for us but we would really love to get more!

ETA: by websites I mean generic search websites...so craigslist for example, of thumbtack, etc if you used that

  • We're using our wedding photographer who has also done our family photos in the past.

  • Wow, that is an awesome deal! Where do you live? ;) I searched a ton of websites, looked at the prices and portfolio. Ultimately, I picked mine on a word of mouth recommendation, but if I hadn't gotten that it would have been based off a website.

I don't belong to a local board...I will have to search those out! I live in NC by the coast in the Cape Fear region.

  • I agree with Facebook also. If you make a page for your photography company, you can make special posts about your offers and people can like/share them. My photographer also does specials sometimes or contests.. If you "share" the post about the special, you could win either a free session or one at a reduced rate, I know those are really popular and end up getting a lot of "shares" which shows your business to all of their friends too.

  • We picked our photographer based on their photos and style. Some people go trendy or mainstream, we tend to like classic shots.
  • I found mine through FB because I liked a friend's maternity pictures and she was in my budget. I would suggest contacting old clients, social media and maybe seeing if you could leave business cards/flyers at places that do elective 4D scans (people that have discretionary income for 4D will also have money for newborn photography).

  • I found mine on Pinterest. I searched "(my city's name) newborn photography" and went from there. Most photag's upload their own photos to Pinterest now from their blog so it was easy to track them down. I think I also just googled that same phrase but I liked being able to see examples of their work as I was searching (on Pinterest).

Yes we are working on Pinterest now @cbrust I know I use it for a lot of ideas for various things. I am working on using social media more effectively. Our big thing right now is that we just moved from Nantucket to this area so we have don't have as many local connections but having contests and specials through there is a great idea.

  • I just did a search online and went through the photographer's pages that came up.  I think I just searched on like Yahoo.
  • I found ours on facebook, a recommendation from a friend. She's a newer photographer who still has very reasonable prices (especially for my area - metro NYC). I'm going to PM you her website so you can get some ideas. I liked that she included prints & pictures on a CD - a big selling point for me. She brings the props (baskets, blankets, headbands) and I can buy any special stuff I want.

  • I googled, and after liking what I saw on her website, I checked out her FB.

  • We're using our wedding photographer (who we found on wedding wire). If I was going to pick someone else, I probably would have searched on Facebook.

  • DH's cousin had family pics done and the photographer posted some teaser pics on her FB page. She tagged DH's cousin in them so that's how we saw them. They were just absolutely stunning so we got her info from his cousin and are using her.
  • We're not really planning on hiring a newborn photographer, but if we did, we would pick the same photographer that did my boudoir shoot in the Fall. She is one of my favourite yoga instructors at the studio my husband and I go to and she does photography as well. Her work is really great and she is a super nice/cool person.

I guess that's kind of word-of-mouth how I found her. She has some business cards and posters at our yoga studio, so that's how I knew she did photography.

Be careful with this.  While lots of Photogs do it, it is actually against FB Terms and Conditions and could get your page banned/suspended.   I know there is a right and wrong way to do it, just not sure what it is.

  • I asked for recommendations from friends/Facebook. I would have shed our wedding photographer but she doesn't do newborn shoots.

Hmm that's interesting. I don't have a business page so I have never looked into it. Good to know!

Our first we found via referral from our wedding photographer. She moved out of the area, so I found our current photographer via a google search.

The two parts of the website I find most important in choosing a photographer are the portfolio and investment sections. I look for a portfolio with a wide variety of clients and photos, and some consistency in style choice and quality. For investment, I prefer seeing package/price examples listed, but barring that, I at least like to see a general price range. I have no interest in falling in love with a photographer way out of my budget, so I'll often check the investment page before scouring the portfolio.
