Summer "camp" at daycare - Updated

Our daycare does a bunch of special activities in the summer including water play, special visitors, etc. The 4yr old group also does swim lessons. Dd will turn 4 in August and I know that they move up in June. Most of her friends will be moving up. Do you think I should try to get her moved up early (June instead of Sept) so that she can participate in swim and stay with her core group of friends?

UPDATE:
I talked to the director and unfortunately they can't move her up. Their licensing requires children to be 4yrs old for swim and to ride the bus on field trips. At least now I know the reason behind it. She'll still have a great summer.

  • If you think she is ready then yes i would--at 4 yo there really isnt any difference developmentally over the course of 2 months, so I would think she is just as ready as those moving up in June and would probably have a ton of fun doing swim lessons with her friends.

  • Our school seems to move kids up when there's space in the next room as the older kids move on sometime over the summer.  I would ask, and assume the only reason they wouldn't accomodate you is if they just don't have room in that classroom yet (if not enough rising Ks have left yet).

  • Are you sure they are not planning to move her?  My daughter is in the same age range and all the kids who will be prek-4 in September move into the new room in June as they like to do moves only twice a year for those that are not impacted by strict ratios (aka kids under 2 have to be in 3 to 1 and under 3 is 6 to 1.)

I haven't asked yet, but last summer kids with bdays in June or sooner moved up in June and summer bdays moved up in Sept.

  • My august bday kids moved up in June to the prek class bc they group them based on school cutoff of sept 1. I would ask about it though it might just depend on numbers and ratios, who is keeping kids in for summer and not
  • It doesn't hurt to ask. Swimming is a useful tool! My DD does it during summer camp and loves it. Enough to do the lessons without friends. You can always enroll in another program if the request is denied.
