Ruling on women's delivery room rights

I saw this article and thought I'd share it with you all... a judge in NJ ruled that a woman in fact does have the right to keep the biological father out of the delivery room after the father sued for the right to be present at the birth.  I wasn't even aware that a hospital wouldn't support a woman deciding who was in the room with her- what if an abusive ex was the father and insisted on being in there?!?!  It only applies if the biological father isn't married to the mother, which has me horrified for the women whose soon to be ex's aren't quite out of the picture yet.  Apparently the decision was partially based on the old Roe v. Wade case as well as an old Planned Parenthood abortion case.

Honestly, while it takes two to make the baby, I can't see why it wouldn't be up to the woman who is in the delivery room with her.  If you have surgery, you're not forced to have someone with you, so you shouldn't be forced to have someone in the room you're uncomfortable with.  I'm certainly not arguing for keeping the baby from the father (a whole separate issue), but labor is about mom doing the work to produce a healthy child while still remaining healthy herself, and this includes mental health (i.e., her comfort) as well in my opinion.  Am I crazy?

It baffles me that a man could sue to be in the room! What a horrible way to eliminate a woman's power- it would have been over my dead body for my ex-waste-of-space to be in the room. Actually, no, I'm wrong. It would've been over my ex's dead body...

In the same vain, does that mean the wife of a man has the right to be in the room when he gets a vasectomy?!? The whole thing is ridiculous.
  • Seriously. This is insane. It's a medical situation, and everything that has to do with a patient and doctor should be private. How is this even an issue?

  • It's ridiculous that this ever even made it to court.  Of course a woman in labor has the same rights to medical privacy as everyone else.  FFS.

  • And I agree, the woman's marital status should not even be relevant.

My husbands ex had his daughter in a hospital and put her and the baby on a confidential list so he could find out here she was cause she didn't want him to ever see his daughter. ( she went mental during pregnancy and left him) We just went through a whole custody battle with the maternal grandmother ( cause the mother went mental again after having a baby with some guy) and one point that the judge put in his answer for decision was that the father of the child was not present at birth and the grandmother was!!!!!
I can see the mans point about wanting to be there if rolls were reversed I know I would want to be there.
  • I saw this posted on NPR's facebook page and couldn't believe some of the crazy comments.. so many guys that responded had the argument that if they couldn't be present for the birth they shouldn't have to pay child support ever. Seriously, WTH?!? That logic doesn't even begin to make sense.....
Those are probably the same dudes that think we need a "Men's Rights Movement."  Men face so much discrimination.
