So my DS had his 6 month checkup today and we had to see a different doctor due to a receptionist screwup. This doctor starts off by telling me that I need to start using Vitamin D drops. (I would like opinions on this because I don't know anything about them) She also said that I need to start giving him rice cereal along with solids. We haven't really started solids yet but I told her we were going to start purees. I asked her why we should use rice cereal and she said because it has more nutrition. Also, according to her, he keeps waking during the night because he's not getting enough nutrients during the day from nursing so I should give him rice cereal before bed and that by 4 months all babies should be sleeping through the night.
The whole time I just nodded my head and went along with everything she was saying. She clearly is not a big supporter of breastfeeding. Can I please get opinions on the Vitamin D drops because I really question everything she told me today. I wish I could have seen our regular doctor : (
Re: Questionable Dr advice
As for the rest, just follow what you and your regular doctor agree on.
I know people say there is no nutrition in rice cereal but it is fortified with a lot of vitamins/minerals. So while maybe not the perfect baby food it is not baby junk food and it is easy to digest. Many people prefer other options. I used cereal with my sons but A just did not want any.
Obviously all babies do not sleep through the night at 4 months old and not all babies should sleep through the night at 4 months old. (Or 6, 9, or 10 months old) A certain percentage of babies will but that doesn't mean they all can, should or will.
I would have done the same thing, nod and then ignore.
We didn't do Vitamin D drops but I know just as many that use it as those that don't.
I didn't ever give little man rice plain, but I did use it and the baby oatmeal to thicken up the purees (I made them) While I think it is better to go straight to real foods, the rice does have extra iron in it that breastfed babies need.

And agree with PPs on the rice cereal, there's really no reason for it. It's NOT going help baby STTN and it may cause issues if his digestive system is not ready for solids so I'd skip that personally.
We were just talking on our BMB about how our parents generation was told the same crap - at some point babies need rice cereal in their milk! Well it's a bunch of crap. They need milk, or formula, period. And they need solids when they WANT solids. It doesn't hurt to try some purees but don't be surprised if you just end up wearing it instead of baby eating it.

January PAL Siggy Challenge: Good Advice
We've had LO on Di-vi-sol since his first Dr. appt.
My pedi told me that rice cereal has alot of iron in it... take that for what it's worth
As far as the feeding cereal before bed, it does not contain any calories and that is really what baby needs right now. Our LO is 4mos 2wks old... My pedi suggested that I nurse LO during the day as often as he wakes me up at night to nurse (every 2 hours) and then maybe he will get on a better nighttime schedule since he will be getting the calories he needs during the day. It took awhile, but he is starting to sleep for longer stretches at night. Maybe this can help you too...
