Breastfeeding

1 month old nursing

My daughter had her 1 month appointment on Monday. She has been nursing anywhere from every 1.5 hours to 4 hours. During the day, she will go longer stretches. I told the doctor this and he said if she is going 3-4 hours during the day, she should be able to at night. He said when she is fussy to try other things like cuddling or a paci before feeding her. If she calms down then she's not really hungry. I'm torn about this because she sometimes will only eat 6 times in a day. I don't want to wait until she's screaming to feed her, but I don't want to overfeed her either. The doctor said she's probably spitting up so much because she is overeating. Any advice? Thank you

  • Maybe she has days and nights mixed up? Could you try waking to eat at shorter intervals during the day then let her wake you at night?

I think this is part of it. I'm trying to wake her every 3 hours during the day so we'll see how she does tonight! She's a very loud sleeper too so I can't always tell if she's hungry or just fussing in her sleep.
  • It's practically impossible to overfeed a breastfed baby. It's just not same as bottle feeding, where the milk/formula just runs down the throat. Also night feeding is totally normal, especially at 1 month.
