Wet diaper change in MOTN or let them sleep?

Hi ladies, haven't posted here since before giving birth so you may not recognize me. Anyway, my 3 month old DD usually wakes up about 2-3 times per night to eat and then goes right back to sleep.  Do you change your LO's wet diapers in the middle of the night or try not to wake them? We use Pampers if that makes a difference.  TIA!

Re: Wet diaper change in MOTN or let them sleep?

  • We normally do one change a night...why wouldn't you? Just so s/he wouldn't wake up? We do it when he wakes up to eat, before he is fed that way he falls back to sleep with no prob.  Change her diaper though! You don't want to start diaper rash or something else

  • We use cloth, but I only change when he wakes to eat. I change first, then feed, then put back down. If for some reason he is crying or fussy and doesn't go back to sleep right away, I will change again. Or, of course, if I hear him poop while feeding, I will change him and put him back on the boob to get him milk drunk again, haha. :) So far no issues with diaper rash or anything.

  • Wait, are you saying you don't change their diaper when they are already awake to eat?? Or are you asking about waking them up extra times just to change diapers, in addition to changing them when they wake to eat?

  • My LO wakes 1x at night. She never completely wakes up though. So I nurse her while laying next to me (we Co sleep) for 5 minutes and she's sleeping again. So, no I don't change her. When she was younger and woke up more often and was really awake, I did.
  • If LO is wet when she wakes to eat I change her. I don't change her unless she wakes up though.

  • The past 3 or 4 weeks lo goes down for the night between 11 and 12 and sleeps straight through until about 7:30. I do not change him. If he wakes to eat, I change and then feed.
  • @nursetrina I'm the same as you. He hasn't had diaper rash and I don't change him in the MOTN. Between midnight and 7, when he feeds he isn't really awake. I figure it's not any different than if he was sleeping through the whole night. I wouldn't wake him to change his diaper. And I don't.

I rarely change a pee diaper during an overnight feed. My only reason is that if I don't feed him when he first starts stirring he will start completely wailing and then my other two kids wake up. If I could figure out a way to do it without him screaming (won't take Paci) I would, but with dh out of town most days, trying to nurse a baby and put 2 other kids back to bed all at the same time is not my idea of a good time. My other kids slept through the night for12 hrs in one diaper and they were fine,so is Ben. I obviously change poopies though, and just deal with the consequences.

  • I started using nighttime diapers. Lo on a good night will sleep 8 hours. I change when he wakes. If it is only three hours I wait unless it is full.

  • No changes unless there's poop (and that's super-rare). We CD and use a pocket diaper stuffed with three inserts, including a hemp one, and woollies to prevent leaks. No rash problems here, and I did the same with DD1 once I figured out she was up for MUCH less time at night if I didn't change her.

I always change whenever she wakes up to eat, but I change the diaper first because 99% of the time she falls asleep at the boob. She very rarely poops at night, but if she did after eating I'd obviously change it before putting her back in her crib. I'm sure she pees a little bit during the feed, but it's clearly not enough to bother her or that I really notice.

  • We change wet diapers when im awake enough so usually 2 feedings per night. Any less and it gets too full.
Around 8 weeks my LO stopped pooping during the night completely so we dont have to worry about that till morning thank God.

This exactly. Always change her as soon as she's up cause then she nurses and passes out. She's pooped once during and I changed her right away.

  • I change LO every time he wakes. I couldn't let him sit in pee even if just a little. I have no issues with him going back to sleep.
Samsies. I use 12 hr diapers. Sometimes she STTN, sometimes she wakes up and I change & feed her every time.

    Same here.

He pees 95% of the time overnight and probably poops 90% of the time, so he gets changed no matter what. I change the diaper after I feed because he usually does the pooping while eating.

  • DS wakes up nurses twice during the night. But never really seems to wake up fully. I feed him for about 5 minutes and he goes right back to sleep. I don't change him unless he's pooped, which is rare, or has a super full, or leaky diaper. If I wake him fully to change him he screams and wakes up DH... Which I have to admit is sometimes tempting! :).
We also have no diaper rash or skin issues.

What brand are you using for the 12 hour diapers? My LO will sleep from 8-830 to 6 am. She has a full diaper and I'm looking for an overnight brand to keep her dry. She is still currently a size one . My other option would be to upgrade her to a size two someone told me.

We used Pampers Baby Dry overnight for DS1. Going up a size for night also helps.

  • I only change E if he's super wet or has pooped. If I change his diaper in the MOTN, he starts screaming and it takes forever to calm him down. I'd rather not piss him off if I don't have to. No issues with diaper rash either.

  • We change her each time she wakes, no matter how full (or not) she feels. We've always changed her before she eats, we don't do any differently at night.

@pink flamingo Sorry for the late reply, just saw this! We use Pampers Swaddlers 12 hour diapers. Probably not as helpful, but they're blue tinted instead of white.

  • Ha! I jinxed myself in this thread yesterday saying I never change wet dipes in the middle of the night. Girl went on a peeing spree last night and a diaper change was a must.
