3rd Trimester

dentist appointment

I have a dentist appointment 1 week before the baby is due. I'm still 2 months away, but I am nervous about the appointment. I am unable to lay on my back for longer than 5 minutes now. I I imagine its just going to get worse. how do these appointments go?  wwhat do they do to accommodate for pregnancy?  I couldn't get an appointment for earlier due to my insurance.

Re: dentist appointment

  • Just be honest with the hygienist about how you are feeling.  I've had two appointments during the pregnancy and they just stopped whenever I needed.

  • I went a few months ago (at about 16-17 weeks?) and actually declined the cleaning and the x-rays, and only did the exam.  I'll go back for cleaning and x-rays after the baby is born, but honestly I couldn't see myself making it through the cleaning without puking, and they only recommend x-rays while pregnant if you have some kind of problem and the benefits outweigh the risks -- not for routine x-rays.

So yeah, unless you HAVE to have the appointment for some reason, I would just reschedule it for after the baby is born.

  • Even though my gums haven't been all that sensitive, I found the cleaning very painful.  I also declined the xrays.  You might want to wait until after.

  • I actually just made an appt for 1.5 weeks before my due date as well.  I found out at my last my appt that I had a couple cavities that need filled, but I wasn't going to do it while I had my m/s, which lasted forever this pregnancy.  Then I alternated between forgetting and procrastinating (I have a terrible gag reflex and hate going to the dentist!)  I just told them I might have to cancel if I have the baby and they understood.  My dentist also does not do x-rays unless necessary on pregnant patients.

  • I'm a hygienist... when I have pregnant patients I don't lay them back very far at all... just let your hygienist know where your comfortable, and when you're not.  She should be accommodating I hope!!  Good luck

  • By the way, if you do need work done that requires numbing, my OB told me to make sure they use something without epinephrine in it.

  • I have my appointment on March 24.. I'll be 37 weeks then.. little nervous about laying on my back..but i'm usually in and out in a hour... and I know once I have the baby it'll be harder for me to make an appt... so I'm just gonna suck it up and go.

  • I just had an appointment and cleaning last week, at 30 weeks. The hygienist was great about, and asked if I was okay on my back or if I wanted to lie on my side. I am still okay on my back for long-ish periods of time, but she did ask me multiple times if I needed a break or wanted to sit up, etc.

They didn't even offer me x-rays because of my pregnancy, but the dentist still came in to have a look around after my cleaning was done.

Because everyone at the office was so happy and excited about my pregnancy (my husband and I have been patient's there since before we were married) it was actually one of my best visits ever ... I normally dread the dentist.
