Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

2 year old party - what are you planning?

DS will be 2 in May and I need to start thinking about this seriously. I have very little clue of what to do for his party so I need some ideas please... location, food, activities, etc... We'll probably have 10-20 people including a few toddlers... What are you planning for your 2 year old's party?

Re: 2 year old party - what are you planning?

  • Just having family over at our place in the morning!  We'll probably do brunch, and of course cake.  Tried to bake one from scratch last year and it sucked so I'm thinking of doing cupcakes.

  • We are doing the party at our house. We are doing a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse theme since DS is obsessed right now. For food, we are doing themed food for each character, Mickey's hot diggity dogs, Donald's cheese and quackers, Pluto's puppy chow, etc. I am having more trouble with activities because I learned at his first birthday that organized games did not work well so I am going to try stations that they can use as they want. The only one I have so far is coloring on themed pages I printed out.
  • 18ish people, all family including some kids. Our house. Pizza, pop for adults, apple juice for kids. Cake and ice cream. Gifts and visiting.About the same thing we did last year. :)

  • We are just doing a party with close family and friends. We're having a choo choo themed party since DS is loving trains right now. We got him a train table and I plan to put out some coloring pages, too. That's about it it for the organized activities. For food we are probably just doing BBQ type foods and I will probably make a jello poke cake. Nothing fancy. I'll probably throw together some decorations, or I might just put up streamers and balloons and call it good. I'm pregnant and my husband will be recovering from surgery so neither of us really feel motivated enough to go all out for something DS won't even remember.

  • last year we did an indoor playground type thing which was easy b/c it was already decorated, there were activities for kids of all ages and tables and chairs were already set.  all we had to bring was the food.  this year we are doing our party at a botanic garden through an art company that will do various art project with the the children...play dough, collages, painting, frame-making, potting plants, etc.  some friends of mine did their party at the zoo which was fun.
  • DD's birthday is in July and we live in Louisiana, so inside was key. We ended up doing it at the Children's Museum. It was easy, surprisingly cheap (included a year's membership with the party fee), they unloaded and loaded everything back into my car, the party room required little decorations (balloons and cake) and with a variety of kid's ages they were all able to find something fun to do.

  • We are having a family party this summer. We'll be at the beach for a family reunion, so all her cousins will be there. I don't plan to have a theme. Just some cupcakes and simple decorations. The kids will have fun together.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • We are doing a Mickey Mouse themed party at our house. I think there will be about 25-30 people invited. We will invite our families and a few of his little friends and their parents. We will probably just grill hot dogs and hamburgers with a few sides. I think for entertainment we will rent a bounce house or possibly buy a small one as his gift. None of this I set in stone but just what I have been thinking, I have until August to decide.

  • I have a similar plan as his 1st birthday but on a much smaller scale. Close friends and family only (last year was pretty much everyone) probably at my mother's house because she has the most room. Picnic type foods (fruit and veggies, maybe a meat and cheese tray) and I'm making cupcakes instead of a regular cake. DS's bday is in August so weather permitting we'll be outside so the kids can run around in the yard and play. That's really about it. I have no games or anything planned, I think the kids will have more fun getting to play on their own and it's less stressful for me that way.

D is 2 on Sunday ...much to everyone's disgust... same kinda deal as last year.  NO PARTY lol

It's his birthday so we do fun stuff for him.. last year we took time off work and just had fun as a family .. we went to the zoo, took family pics, goofed off at the park and just generally had some good quality family time.  He could care less about parties and isn't that keen on crowds of people..

We try not to over plan anything since we have no idea how he will feel, what mood he will be in... so it's all planned flexibility .. we have a bunch of options and depending on weather, his mood and all the other usual factors we shall just juggle them over  the 4 day vacation we have taken.

If he is up for it, a 4 hour drive to the coast, if not... we have a museum, zoo and aquarium all within 30 minutes of where we live, which we have annual passes for.. we have a bunch of parks that he loves that we can choose from to go take pics, play Tball, soccer, fly his kite, bubbles and just generally run round like crazy pirates.. much to the amusement of the joggers and cyclists lol

..daddy will bake him a cake probably and we'll just have some good old fashioned family time.

We both work full-time/ opposite shifts/opposite days off... so that is way more important to us as a family than having a party to keep other people happy :)  Last year a relative of DH who wasn'timpressed at no party ( mainly cos his wife wasn't a happy camper AT ALL   >>>>>INSERT major understatement here lol), told me that it wasn't about my son at this age, it was about the adults enjoying a party FOR HIM...... and you can see where that got them lol

It's totally about my son enjoying HIS birthday.. and if he hates big family gatherings..and women who squeak at him .. you know what I mean.. that OMG BABY ALERT  that makes grown women suddenly 6 decibels higher and talking like idiots......oh well lol

My DH and I and our son will have a blast.. and I am sure whatever you choose will be right for you and you also will have a great day, Don't stress it by trying to overdo the pomp n ceremony to impress people

.. have fun, get dirty .. smile and take pics  .. perfect day  :)
