Amber/hazel wood necklaces

Just wondering if anyone has used them? I bought an anklet but he's too little for it yet. It just slips off. I'm nervous about getting the necklace. Is there any chance of it being a choking hazard? I'm just worried they could somehow choke themselves. Has anyone used them? And if so, is there one you would suggest?

Re: Amber/hazel wood necklaces

  • I know several people that use the amber necklaces and swear by them. No personal experience yet but I plan to try the necklace.

  • I haven't used them but my SIL swears by them.

I just asked one of my friends and she said:
I got mine from Momsmilkboutique.com. but inspired by Finn is a high quality maker. The lighter/milkier the color and raw are the most effective.

She also said that her daughter has worn it since she was about 3 months old and has never had an incident.
  • When i originally researched this there had been no recorded injuries from the necklaces. The strings they are on are made in such a way that they will snap easily if they get snagged on something (to prevent strangulation. Most of them have knots between each bead so in the case of snapping all the beads don't come off to prevent choking.

Now as far as effectiveness goes, we have an amber one for DD and got it when she was 4 months old. She never woke through the night due to teething, never drooled and never had diaper rash due to teething (likely due to the fact that she wasn't drooling). Heck, her cheeks never even got pink. I just noticed a few weeks ago that she had gotten her two year molars in and I never even suspected so obviously it didn't bother her coming in. Take it for what it's worth. She may have just been a good teether anyways but I was too scared to take off the necklace to prove it.

Now my SIL uses the hazel wood necklace for her son because he had issues with bad diaper rash and eczema and she told me that it cleared right up with the necklace.

Based on my experience with DD, DS will certainly be getting an amber one. Just make sure you get it from someone reputable (inspired by Finn, etc.) as there are fakes around and don't purchase one used.

  • I have one that LO wears during the day (when I remember...oops!) but I'm too scared to leave it on overnight.  Only thing is I was told it takes like 3 hours to start being effective, so not sure if only wearing during the day would even do any good. :/  I'm curious if other ladies let their LO wear it during the night too?  It just makes me nervous.

I've always let DD wear hers at night (started at 4 months - she's 2.5 now) because based on my research I believe them to be safe. I know that some people get nervous and loop them around the baby's ankle a couple times at night and put a footed sleeper over it so it doesn't fall off

ETA: words so it made sense

hmm I guess that makes me feel better that there haven't been any incidents because of it.  I thought about doing the around the ankle thing, but I just felt like it would be uncomfortable, so a few minutes after I put it on her ankle I took it off because I felt bad, lol.
  • Thanks guys!!

I had never heard of this. So how do you decide between amber or hazel? Does one do something different than the other??

I looked on that inspired by Finn site. (Thanks @holly1416‌ ) There's info in there between them. The hazel wood is more for "acid induced" conditions it seems. The amber seems easier to take care of, and I think helps more with teething. But read that and check it out!
  • It's just an amber resin bead necklace. It's meant to help with teething. A lot of people swear by them. I figure it's worth a shot!

Check out MommaBeanStalk on etsy. I know lots of people that swear by them but you have to deal with someone reputable bc there are a lot of fakes out there

This. Make sure it's real Baltic amber. I started using one around 10 weeks. I guess we will see how well it works soon...

  • They are super popular around here. My question is: if they are so effective, then why don't we all use them for natural pain/swelling relief? It just doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

A friend  I have talked to uses the necklace with her LO, and said that she always just stuck it under her clothes and her LO never fussed with it.
  • I ordered one for my husband too. He gets a headache every day. Hoping it helps him too! He's pretty sick of having to take Tylenol and Advil
  • I. Have one for dd1- I would take it off at night when she was younger- even though if it broke they are knotted so they won't go flying--- I did notice when she was teething and didn't have the necklace on/ shed get a rash, be in pain, etc.... She's getting her last 2 yr molar and I've just kept the necklace on her even through the night- she is doing great with that tooth

I'd love to know if your husband thinks it makes a difference for him!
  • I told my friend who is a mother of 3 about this and she had a heart attack that I was even contemplating using something that could be a choking hazard. I tried to explain but she still told me I was nuts. I would really love to get one if it helps. I found out about these on some blog I stumbled upon through Pinterest.

I'll try to remember to update.. But there's a good chance I'll forget .. I'm sure if we notice a difference I'll end up making a post about it though!
