Delayed spit up

Hi ladies,

First time posting over here. My little guy is 3 weeks old. He has been a champion feeder since birth. He usually takes both sides for a feeding. This last week he has spit up (liquid, not chunky or curdled) a few times about 30 min or more after feeding and burping are done. As a new mom, Im worried he will do so in his sleep. Is there anything I can do to help the situation? He very rarely spits up usually.

This happens to my LO and has since she was first born. I found that holding her upright for 15-20 mins after a feeding helps with the delayed spit up. Have you tried this?

@cbowl Will try it! Thanks! Did you do that if your LO fell asleep nursing too? (Nursing is how he falls into his deep night sleep. I will try it then as well.)

@Noethola‌ I never (fingers crossed) had a problem with my LO spitting up when I fed her during night nursing but early on when she was spitting up a ton during the day I would shift her upright to lay on my chest on her tummy after nursing at night and keep her there for 10-15 mins before laying her down. She wouldn't wake up with that movement but I just had to make sure to set an alarm for myself as I was worried I would fall asleep with her on my chest when I nursed in bed. She also sleeps in a rock n play which is on an incline so that might help with the night spitting up as well.

  • Some babies will spit up a lot no matter what you do. What exactly worries you about it? I would find my first son in pools of spit up. I would put him in the crib with a thick burp rage under his head and remove it after 10 minutes. No matter how long I kept him upright, he would spit up a couple minutes after I laid him down.

My DD is almost 7 weeks old and she spits up pretty much all the time. We've tried burping her every 2-3 minutes during feeds, kept her upright after feeding, everything possible, but there were times where she would still throw up hour or so later.

  • Thanks ladies. He doesnt spit up often at all, usually. And when he did this, it sounded as if he was choking at the same time.

Glad to know it isnt totally abnormal for spit up to happen much later.
