  • No not judgy IMO. Sometimes when I'm at the grocery and see what some of those people have in their carts sickens me. That's probably judgy.

  • Well yes its judgy, but IMO not a bad judgy...i am 100% in the "wtf" camp on that one...and I agree with PP that sometimes I SMH at the carts in the grocery store.

  • Yes, I think it's judgy. Just because they are on food stamps they can't have energy drinks? No candy either? They can only get things you approve of?

The country I lived in switched from food stamp-type programs to unconditional cash transfers for poor people more than 10 years ago. A lot of people were like OMG THE POORS ARE GONNA USE THE MONEY TO BUY DRUGS/BOOZE/TVS.

Guess what, it works better this way. People will make the best choices for themselves/their families, better than the choices the government/judgy people would make for them.
  • @paulaknl I hear what you are saying which is kinda why I questioned myself .... I don't look at people and classify them into categories... I just felt that the huge sign was overkill

I do think its a bit unfair that some assistance is regulated more than others but I'll be honest I am glad to get my WIC, it saves me about $50 / month

  • @credcat7 I absolutely agree that it's unfair that different assistance programs have different rules. That's another reason why cash transfers work better IMO.
  • well this thread has helped me figure out why I was so bothered by it all.  I'm less upset that people are allowed (or that the people who review EBT allowances thought it was a wise choice) but more so that the sign exists to encourage people to buy that damn stuff. in all its 20x20 glory no less

My sister was on that program when she had my niece and nephews and she always bought carp stuff that was on the list instead of healthy foods, and even to this day all they ever want to eat is carp food and soda. If they would limit that kinda stuff to promote more healthy foods I wouldn't have such a problem with it, but they wonder why our society is so heavy... ~off my soapbox now~

  • @kmartinrvt13 I recenltly found this blog from a lady who made 1 month of recipies using funds allowed by SNAP and posted grocery lists and it was pretty impressive.. that said... I am willing to see both sides but I think education is key in some situtations
