Huge Twins

Anyone else with huge twins? I'm 25 weeks 6 days and my boys are huge. It worries me because I'm have a very small frame. The boys are measuring 2lbs 5oz and 2lbs 4oz (79% and 75%). I know it's good that they're big, but how are they going to fit!

I'm also curious if you did have big twins were they large as they matured once born as well?

Re: Huge Twins

  • At 26 weeks my boys were 2lb 6/2lb 3. They were born at 33w2d weighing 5lb 8oz and 4lb 10oz. I am petit as well. A size 4 pre-pregnancy.

    I'm 29 wks and the boys are 3#2, 3#4, & 3#6.
Just measured 39 wks for a singleton (fungal). Size 0 pre preg. Don't know how it works, but they find room.

  • That's around what mine measured for that point in gestation and were 4 pounds and 4 15 at birth. The ultrasound weights are not always right. They guessed baby a would be 6 pounds at birth but were way off. Those are just estimates.

  • My boy/ boy twins were both measuring about a week ahead at my last ultrasound.  That is a good thing with twins!  I'm only 5'4", but I know my body will figure out where to put them.

  • Mine consistently measured 2-3wks ahead after the halfway point. They were 6.1 and 6.9 at birth so average size, and I'm also petite...under 5' tall and a size 4 pre-pregnancy.

  • I had an appt on Monday at 27w5d and they were measuring 2lbs 13oz and 2lbs 10oz and I was measuring 40w. No reason for it as far as they can tell, just big and long since both DH and I are tall. DD was 8lbs 5oz at birth.

  • Each of my girls have been about the same size of a singleton at all my anatomy scans with less than 1% difference in size between the two. I'm now at 30 weeks Mo/Di and my doctor said their growth will probably slow down from now on.  At 28 weeks they measured about 2lbs 11oz each.
  • Just remember: It's a measurement, not a fact. It estimates the weight from stomach and head circumferences, so it cannot actually tell the weight. At 34w mine are measuring 6.5 and 5.12, with 3-4 weeks to go.

  • Just wanted to say remember ultrasounds can be off by 2 lbs in either direction. DD was supposedly 5 lbs at 33 weeks, but she was born at 39 weeks and 6 lbs 2 oz, so she was obviously not 5 lbs at 33 weeks!

It's been a while so I can't remember the exact estimates but my twins were measuring average and within an ounce or two of each other during every ultrasound. They were born at 37w2d - A (Amelia) was 7lbs 12 oz. and B (Owen) was 6lbs 5 oz. Now at nearly 3 years old, she still outweighs him. As of a week ago she was 35.6lbs and he was 33.1lbs, according to our bathroom scale.

ETA: I'm 5'3" and while I am considered plus size, my body stretched enough to fit them. I was measuring 47 weeks at my appt. just five days prior. If you want to see a pic from 37 weeks exactly, let me know. I don't want to post it and scare you. ;)

  • I am 25 weeks today and my di/di boys measured today at 2lbs1oz and 1lb 10oz. Both measured ahead of schedule and dr wasn't concerned that they are so different in size.
  • My b/g twins were born at 36 wks weighing 6lb 14oz and 6lbs (with fundal height of 47 weeks!!). I was a size 0 prepregnancy and as others have said, somehow they just fit. :)

  • My b/g twins always measured 65% and above each for the growth ultrasounds. I don't remember the weights but they were born at 33 w 5 d and weighed 5 lbs 7 oz and 4 lbs 11 oz. I am 5'5 and was a size 4 pre-pregnancy. My ob said if we made it to my scheduled C-section at 38 w 1 d my bigger twin would have been well over 7 lbs.

At 25weeks both my babies were in the 95% for growth. I don't remember the actual weights but I remember being very proud about that. The doctors warned me they would probably slow down in growth and they have. At 34 weeks one was 5.5lbs and one was 6.5lbs and I was a size 4 or 6 before pregnancy. It all fits and I can still move around and do things, not very comfortably, but I can. I've been gardening for the last two days. You got this momma.

  • Mine were born at 37w3d via scheduled csection and they were 7lbs 12oz and 7lbs 2oz. If I'd been allowed to go all the way to the end, I might have made the Guinness book of world records, lol.

The book I'm currently reading indicated twins are totally different than singleton pregnancies. She explains that twins mature quicker and tend to gain more weight in the second trimester, and slow down in the third. As opposed to the average singleton, whose lungs might not at all be mature at 35/36 weeks and then put on the bulk of their weight in the latter third trimester. It's Dr Luke's book, When You Are Expecting Twins, Triplets or Quads. I'm also enjoying this one: Twins! Pregnancy, Birth and the First Year of Life by Agnew, Klein, Ganon
