Blood on umbilical stump in 1 week old?

I don't remember this on DS. Every diaper I've changed for Evelyn today has some blood from the umbilical stump. Not a lot... Like a small thumbnail sized smear or two. Just enough to freak me out, and of course I can't reach dh (though he likely wouldn't know much either, since he does adult medicine).

We've a weight check tomorrow morning at the pedi. Do I need to get her in today?

It doesn't smell or look infected but it's definitely producing some fresh red blood.

  • DD's stump did the same thing. Stopped after a couple of days. Pedi said it was probably because it came off so quickly. Is mention it tomorrow but it should be ok.

  • Her cord is still there, just kind of lightly bleeding around the base.

    I'm freaked out.

By the slightest smear of blood. :-/

  • Unless it starts bleeding a lot, you should be A-OK waiting until her appointment tomorrow. Don't stress! I'm sure she's fine!

  • DD2 had the same thing. My pedi checked it out for us at a weight check and said it was normal but if it didn't stop he could put silver nitrate on it. Thankfully we didn't have to go that far. If you already have a weight check scheduled I would see if they can take a look.

  • I remember little spots of blood here and there when Jason was newborn... would happen especially if the diaper rubbed against it.. he was fine!  Like other's said, ask just to be sure but I'm sure she's OK :)

  • It's normal. It happened to both DD and DS. The pedi just told us to clean it with rubbing alcohol, and let it dry before putting a diaper on.

  • DD's did that shortly before it fell off. DH was a little freaked to say the least when it did. But, have the doc check it tomorrow just to be safe. Just keep an eye on it throughout today. Btw, congrats on your LO. I hope your HG is now completely gone and you can enjoy food again.

  • We also had to go the silver nitrate route, it had a little dark blood but my issue with it was the smell. My MIL was like "oh, that's normal." No bitch, the smell of rotting flesh was not normal.

Sorry, I get irritated all over again just thinking about it.
Oh I remember the smell. The nurses told us not to use rubbing alcohol to dry it out but my nurse aunt said it was fine to use it and the smell was reduced thank goodness.

OP, I recall the stump bleeding a little as well as it was separating. It was horrifying. When it finally flicked off DH and I screamed. But we are pansies. Your DD will be fine even if a little medical help is needed, it's normal.
