Baptism/Christening Gift Ideas?

DH and I are the godparents for a good couple friend's son.  He's actually getting baptized the same day as our LO is :)  Neither of us have been a godparent or even been close to a child being baptized and aren't sure what to get him.  I know I'm going to get a customized Christmas ornament with his name and the date because they have a huge tree every year with lots of meaningful ornaments, but I need something else.

I'm sure he already has a kid's Bible and I'd like to get him something sentimental but somewhat useful, maybe a book of prayers for children?  They are Catholic (as is DH, I'm not), so maybe a rosary?  I feel like that's weird to get for a 4 month old, but that may be the non-Catholic in me ;)

TIA for suggestions!!

Re: Baptism/Christening Gift Ideas?

  • I don't know what to give either. DH ended up giving his goddaughter a decent sized check since I really had no idea what kind of gift to give.

  • A check or a savings bond is nice. Sometimes I have seen jewelry like a name bracelet or cross necklace. I have given mostly savings bonds when I have went to a baptism. My goddaughter I bought her dress and all her accessories then gave her her cross.
  • Our LO got a couple of different bibles (my favorite is a rhyme bible), a handprint kit, crosses, picture frames, clothes, money for his savings account, personalized silverware set. Really, it turned out to be a wide assortment as not all gifts were baptism related.

  • I have always done a savings bond or a cross necklace

  • We received a few different things, crosses, money, rosaries, etc. But my favorite was this really beautiful silver pacifier clip and I thought that was the BEST idea. Now he has something "dressy" for special occasions.

  • Thanks everyone for the ideas!  I know savings bonds/$ is really common but want to do something more personal.  As per usual, if it were a girl shopping would be so much easier!  I'd love to get a cross necklace, darn boys :P

@sehudson821 - I didn't know there was such a thing as dressy pacifier clips, I'm going to have to look it up!  That's definitely something I could see them using for him.

  • My mom said she got it from a local religious shop. But I googled "silver pacifier clip" and tons of stuff came up! Good luck!

  • You can still do a cross necklace or even baby bracelet with a cross. They make them for boys too and it's something they can keep and pass down to their own children.
  • Try looking around catholiccompany.com or your local catholic bookstore. Our baby girl was baptized two weeks ago and she received a prayer buddy (little lamb that helps her learn her prayers), a plush "my first rosary," a nice crucifix for her room which we then asked the deacon to bless, a very simple child's book of the gospel, and monetary gifts. I've seen most of the gifts she received on catholiccompany.com.
  • I'm catholic and always get the baby a savings bond or cash. Is that a shitty gift? I always do that because it will give the parents money to start a savings account since you sometimes need at least $500 in the account.

  • We received a Noah's Ark musical snow globe thing from X's godmother. It's engraved with his full name and baptism date. Not practical, but beautiful (I believe it's from Things Remembered). To a friends son who's baptism we were not a part of, I sent a Bible Animals board book.

  • DH and I bought our goddaughter a silver cross from Tiffany's. For other baptisms we give a card and a check.

  • @MiaMyPuggle‌ Definitely not shitty and we may do that as part of it. I just wanted something where years later they can say "oh that was from his godparents!" I am big on sentimental stuff, too much so in Dhs opinion... I keep most bday cards I get if they have a nice note in them!

  • This wonderful little thing protects and can last for ages. Why not to give a protective-angel medallion as we did last year? Fast delivered and good communication; that's why I suggest this e-shop. That guy who makes these things is simply cool!  :)>-
  • My favorite gifts for DD's baptism were not religious. BIL & SIL got her a canvas that says "twinkle twinkle little star, do you know how loved you are?" with her name and birthdate, and her godparents got her a beautiful silver jewelry box with a personalized silver plate on top.

  • Does the baby have a patron saint? DS was named after Saint Patrick and my aunt got him a little card with his prayer on it. I really like it.

  • Ack! I was caught by the zombie! I was wondering why they were talking about 4 month olds.
