March 2014 Moms

Question on PP (tmi possibly)

So my little guy is 6days old already! Time sure does fly! I wasn't quite sure where else to ask this so I figured you march mamas have been good with everything else so I'd ask you.

I knew I would be sore down below, but I didn't expect to be so sore near my urethral opening and on one of my 'lips'. It almost feels like a have a cut, it's a burning sensation, but I can't see to be able to tell. I'm just curious if this is normal or should I make an appointment.

I know the major response is going to be to ask my doctor. But I would just like opinions and expierences from you ladies. Thank you.

  • Did you get stitches?  Did you push for a long time?  Either of those could be a factor.  you could have some swelling.

  • I have two stitches and pushed for about 45mins. I know I am swollen, I guess I figured my pain would be in a different location.
  • I have the same pain but I got stitches by my urethral opening and lower.
Ibuprofen every 6 hrs for inflammation is what my doc said. Also make sure you're not overdoing it with walking too much.
I would call your doc gor sure just to verify all is ok
  • I tore my labia and close to my urethra. Make sure to use your sitz bath. I actually might have an infection so I'm going to my doctor today. If it's really bothering you get it checked out.

  • I had issues from my catheter. Did you have one???
I was swollen and irritated from it. My docs checked for an infection (bladder and uti) but there wasn't one. It was a strange feeling and I actually still feel it occasionally if there's any pressure on that area.
My OB put me on an antibiotic anyways, telling me I could still benefit from it, as it will rid of the irritation caused.

I was also told I had internal stitches but I also had one external that I wasn't aware of. It seems weird to me bc it's not at my vagina (I had no tearing there when baby was delivered), it was above it, to my right....closer to my urethra. Not sure how or why that happened but that stung like a mofo when I went to the bathroom.

Both of these issues were more uncomfortable than the normal pp issues and they seemed to last longer. My vagina and surroundings were swollen and sore for a few days, but these other issues lasted up to 2-3 weeks pp.

Def check in with your doc! Hope you feel some relief asap!
  • I'm glad this was asked. I had a catheter when I went in with my water break for about 3 days. I also had one for my c section. I'm almost 10 weeks pp and still having pain near my urethra but only when I'm sleeping. I sleep on my side all curled up. Is this from the catheter too possibly? Why only at night??

I'm by no means a doctor....but maybe because the weight of your other leg is putting pressure on your lady bits?
My OB told me that irritation from a catheter definitely happens so it very well could be the pain your experiencing!
Hope it resolves quickly. That was super uncomfortable!
  • I was given a bottle (peri bottle?) to fill with warm water and spray on your women bits when you go to the bathroom...makes things feel so much better.

    Yes!! Amazing!!
    And the ice pack pads!
    Both helped immensely!
  • Did you have a cath inserted? If so, sounds like it irritated you. I concur with the bottle. Really makes my entire nether region feel good after I pee.

  • When baby is crowning it's not just the tissues around the vagina that stretch, the whole perineal area kind of bulges outwards so you can have tearing pretty much anywhere (vaginal, cervical, labial or urethral). Even if there isn't a true tear the stretching can make the tissues raw and painful. I had labial tears on both side that they didn't stitch (were small and didn't need repair) that hurt more than the 2nd degree vaginal tear they did stitch.

Try ice packs or padsicles to the area, and ibuprofen to help with pain and swelling.

  • Thanks ladies! I did have a cath. I guess as a FTM I thought I did pretty well preparing myself for all the pains and joys that came with pp. Except this one! No where in my readings did it say 'it'll hurt like a b*tch to pee' but everything you all are saying makes sense.

I've done the ibuprofen, Ice pack and peri bottle but I just wanted to make sure it was a pretty 'normal' thing after birth. Thank you!
  • Not that you all are dying to know what's wrong with my lady bits lol. But I wanted to give an update so if anyone else was having the pain they would know.

I'm sitting at the doctor right now and they say I have a uti (more than likely, we won't know 100% until my labs come back) also I have two tears by my urethral that the doctor at the hospital didn't sew up. So I now have to get more stitches. :( I'm shitting bricks sitting here. Not only am I sore as hell down there and didn't enjoy her poking around! Now it's going to be with a needle!!!!

Anyway ladies if you have pain be sure to get checked out. I'm hoping it'll help
  • Thanks for following up. It's good to hear when pain is "normal" and when it isn't. Sorry to hear about your extra stitches and probably UTI! I hope they at least numb you thoroughly for the stitches so you get a few hours of medicated relief.
